Nerine latent virus (NeLV) is a plant pathogenic virus. It infects Nerine, Narcissus, Hippeastrum and Ismene plants.
Taxonomy
NeLV was first described in 1972.Hakkaart FA (1972) Virusziekten van Nerine. Jversl Inst Plziektenk Onderz, Wageningen 1971:105–106{{cite web|url=https://ictv.global/ictv/proposals/2012.015aP.A.v1.Carlavirus_remove-sp.pdf|title=Remove (abolish) the species Narcissus symptomless virus in the genus Carlavirus, family Betaflexiviridae|website=ictv.global|publisher=International Committee On Taxonomy of Viruses|date=2012|access-date=31 January 2025}} In 2004 it was placed in the Carlavirus genus within the family Flexiviridae.{{cite journal | last1 = Adams | first1 = MJ | last2 = Antinow | first2 = JF | last3 = Bar-Joseph | first3 = M | last4 = Brunt | first4 = AA | last5 = Candresse | first5 = T | last6 = Foster | first6 = GD | last7 = Martelli | first7 = GP | last8 = Milne | first8 = RG | last9 = Fauquet | first9 = CM | year = 2004 | title = The new plant family Flexiviridae and assessment of molecular criteria for species demarcation | journal = Arch Virol | volume = 149 | issue = 5| pages = 1045–1060 | doi = 10.1007/s00705-004-0304-0 | pmid = 15098118 | s2cid = 34493607 | doi-access = free }} When that family was split in 2009, Carlavirus and NeLV were placed in the family Betaflexiviridae.
= Narcissus symptomless virus =
Narcissus symptomless virus was described as a separate virus taxon in 2006.{{cite journal|last1=Chen|first1=J.|last2=Shi|first2=Y.-H.|last3=Lu|first3=Y.-W.|last4=Adams|first4=M. J.|last5=Chen|first5=J.-P.|title=Narcissus symptomless virus: a new carlavirus of daffodils|journal=Archives of Virology|date=9 June 2006|volume=151|issue=11|pages=2261–2267|doi=10.1007/s00705-006-0801-4|pmid=16763730|s2cid=19997956}} Subsequently, in 2016 it became apparent that the
nucleotide sequence identities between Narcissus symptomless virus and the partial genome sequences of Nerine latent virus are 94-97% for coat protein and replicase, well above the threshold 72% set for speciation of flexiviruses. Consequently, these two viruses can be considered to be the same taxon, and since NeLV has priority, Narcissus symptomless virus should be reduced to a synonym.Wylie SJ, Jones MGK (2012) Complete genome sequences of seven carlavirus and potyvirus isolates on Narcissus and Hippeastrum plants in Australia, and proposals to clarify their naming.
