Reception

On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an approval rating of 34% based on reviews from 32 critics, with an average rating of 5.83 out of 10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Overcrowded, overwrought, and overly familiar, New Amsterdam plays more like an exquisite corpse of pre-existing shows than a breakthrough for the genre – though that may be enough for medical drama devotees."{{cite web |url=https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/new_amsterdam_2018/s01 |title=New Amsterdam: Season 1 |publisher=Rotten Tomatoes |access-date=January 1, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190109031144/https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/new_amsterdam_2018/s01|archive-date=January 9, 2019|url-status=live}} On Metacritic, the series has a weighted average score of 47 out of 100 based on 14 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".{{cite web |url=https://www.metacritic.com/tv/new-amsterdam-2018 |title=New Amsterdam: Season 1 |publisher=Metacritic|access-date=September 26, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180927203647/https://www.metacritic.com/tv/new-amsterdam-2018|archive-date=September 27, 2018|url-status=live}}
Michael Starr of the New York Post wrote: "New Amsterdam will satisfy fans of the genre. It's somewhat predictable, with a moderate dose of prime-time soapiness. But with Eggold's strong performance and an interesting supporting cast, this show could be the right prescription to attract a following."{{cite news |date=September 19, 2018 |last=Starr |first=Michael |title='New Amsterdam' could propel Ryan Eggold to leading-man status |url=https://nypost.com/2018/09/19/new-amsterdam-could-propel-ryan-eggold-to-leading-man-status/ |newspaper=New York Post |access-date=February 21, 2021 |archive-date=May 16, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210516192624/https://nypost.com/2018/09/19/new-amsterdam-could-propel-ryan-eggold-to-leading-man-status/ |url-status=live }}
Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times wrote: "It is as baldly manipulative and corny as heck—the pilot ends with a Coldplay song—and even a little ridiculous. But the actors sell it, and the fact that the action can seem so unlikely oddly just makes it more compelling."{{cite web |author=Robert Lloyd |title=Review: Two looks at hospitals and healthcare come to TV with 'New Amsterdam' and 'The Mayo Clinic: Faith - Hope - Science' |url=https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/la-et-st-new-amsterdam-mayo-clinic-faith-hope-science-review-20180925-story.html |website=Los Angeles Times |date=September 25, 2018 |access-date=February 21, 2021 |archive-date=February 26, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210226201125/https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/la-et-st-new-amsterdam-mayo-clinic-faith-hope-science-review-20180925-story.html |url-status=live }} Caroline Framke of Variety gave the series a negative review, and was critical of Ryan Eggold in particular: "The problem is that no matter how many side characters and plots the series adds into the mix—and it adds a lot—the doctor who's supposed to be its main catalyst for change is so irritating that he ends up overshadowing the more promising elements."{{cite web |date=September 24, 2018 |last=Framke |first=Caroline |title=TV Review: NBC's 'New Amsterdam' |url=https://variety.com/2018/tv/reviews/new-amsterdam-review-nbc-1202954780/ |website=Variety |access-date=February 21, 2021 |archive-date=February 5, 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210205154812/https://variety.com/2018/tv/reviews/new-amsterdam-review-nbc-1202954780/ |url-status=live }}

Potential spin-off
In January 2020, NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy said, "There is a potential for a spinoff. I can imagine a whole world around New Amsterdam." At that time, Nellie Andreeva of Deadline Hollywood added that no conversations were happening, but members of the production were open to the possibility because of the depth of New Amsterdam characters and stories that could be explored with a spin-off.{{cite web|url=https://deadline.com/2020/01/new-amsterdam-spinoff-possibility-nbc-1202827951/|title='New Amsterdam' Spinoff A Possibility Following Big Three-Season Renewal |last=Andreeva |first=Nellie |work=Deadline Hollywood |date=January 11, 2020|access-date=January 11, 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200112011018/https://deadline.com/2020/01/new-amsterdam-spinoff-possibility-nbc-1202827951/ |archive-date=January 12, 2020|url-status=live}}
