=Background and early career=
Nicolas Dalby started learning karate as a teen to defend himself against bullies. He moved from Sønderborg to Copenhagen to be around his friends. After five years of training karate, he started training in Rumble Sports, one of the biggest MMA gyms in Copenhagen. He had a total of five amateur fights, losing the first one by decision and winning the rest of them. Dalby was quickly recognized for his powerful striking and knockout power. He became one of the most feared strikers in Europe after many brutal knockouts.{{cite web|url=http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2410802-the-beaten-path-nicolas-dalby-ufcs-second-danish-fighter-embraces-inner-nerd|title=The Beaten Path: Nicolas Dalby, UFC's 2nd Danish Fighter, Embraces Inner Nerd|author=Scott Harris|work=Bleacher Report}}{{cite web|url=http://fightnetwork.com/news/45766:nicolas-dalby-hoping-to-continue-rise-at-cage-warriors-66/|title=Nicolas Dalby Hoping to Continue Rise at Cage Warriors 66|work=fightnetwork.com|access-date=2015-05-31|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150612134726/http://fightnetwork.com/news/45766:nicolas-dalby-hoping-to-continue-rise-at-cage-warriors-66/|archive-date=2015-06-12|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|url=http://www.mmaplus.co.uk/features/nicolas-dalby-tells-mma-plus-interest-mma-got-kicked-karate/#sthash.ie08VEod.dpbs|title=Nicolas Dalby explains why he was forced out of karate dojo|work=MMA Plus|date=11 November 2014 }}
