The song is an upbeat pop song with a string arrangement similar to his hit single "Yes" with David McAlmont. The song was well-received by critics. Ned Raggett of AllMusic wrote: "Not Alone crashes in like a pop anthem from heaven. It's the absolute standout on People Move On when it comes to showing that Butler can equal the sweep and passion of his previous collaborators."Raggett, Ned. Writing for Scottish music magazine The List, Alastair Mabbott rated "Not Alone" four stars out of five, saying: "remember a Meat Loaf song called 'Everything Louder Than Everything Else'? Butler does and goes for the symphonic, Spectoresque jugular this time around."{{cite journal|url=https://archive.list.co.uk/the-list/1998-03-06/51/|title=Music - record reviews|journal=The List|issue=327|last=Mabbott|first=Alastair|date=6 March 1998|page=49|accessdate=28 December 2016}}

Chuck Taylor of Billboard wrote: "From the start, "Not Alone" builds like an old-style 60s pop hit, with a wall of upfront strings and rusty guitars and a chorus that's terrifically clever and instantly accessible."{{cite magazine|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=JwoEAAAAMBAJ&q=%22bernard+butler%22&pg=PA27|last=Taylor|first=Chuck|title=Rock tracks: Not Alone|magazine=Billboard|date=17 October 1998}} He later ranked "Not Alone" at number seven in his top ten songs of 1998.{{cite magazine|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Mw0EAAAAMBAJ&q=bernard+butler+not+alone&pg=RA1-PA49|title=The Year in Music 1998|magazine=Billboard|last=Taylor|first=Chuck|date=26 December 1998|accessdate=6 August 2013}}
