Nueva Italia (Spanish for New Italy) is a town in the Central Department of Paraguay.
History
Nueva Italia was created in 1904 by the Paraguay government in order to establish some colonists from Italy and their 18 families in a farming area 40 km south of the capital Asunción. In addition to Italians, a community of German and Ukrainian emigrants also moved to Nueva Italia.{{Citation needed|date=November 2021}}

The first manager-administrator of this Colonia Nueva Italia (as was officially named) was the Italian count Enrico Statella.[https://books.google.com/books?id=B6o9AAAAYAAJ&dq=italiani+di+nueva+italia+-+paraguay&pg=PA425 Italiani di Nueva Italia, p. 425] After WW1 many Italians returned to Italy or moved to the capital Asuncion, but the settlement -after an initial crisis- survived & remained as a small agricultural center. In the 1930s the colony was a success and grew in importance as a farming city for the Greater Asunción area[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78kqJnhQ5zk Video on the history of Nueva Italia (in Spanish)]
In 1956 was created the Distrito Nueva Italia,{{Cite web |url=http://www.central.gov.py/seccion.php |title=Nueva Italia |access-date=2011-01-22 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110122112501/http://www.central.gov.py/seccion.php |archive-date=2011-01-22 |url-status=live }} that in the 2010s have nearly 20,000 inhabitants.
The main activities are farming and husbandry.[http://www.abc.com.py/edicion-impresa/interior/la-memoria-viva-de-nueva-italia-830716.html Nueva Italia testimony (in Spanish)] Recently is being developed some tourism, thanks to new roads toward the capital and other surroundings[http://www.adndigital.com.py/nueva-italia-de-tierra-de-labriegos-a-extraordinario-potencial-turistico/ Tourism possibilities, with photos (in Spanish)]
The city is located to the north of the "Distrito Nueva Italia" and has a perfect square shape, because of the original urban planning promoted by count Enrico Statella.[https://web.archive.org/web/20111129232725/http://www.dgeec.gov.py/Publicaciones/Biblioteca/Atlas%20Censal%20del%20Paraguay/14%20Atlas%20Central%20censo.pdf Maps detailed and data on Nueva Italia and its District]
