OOIOO is a Japanese experimental rock band. The four-piece ensemble was founded by Yoshimi P-We (also known as Yoshimio), the drummer and occasional trumpeter for Boredoms.{{cite web|url={{AllMusic|class=artist|id=p311949|pure_url=yes}}|title=((( OOIOO > Biography )))|last=McCarthy|first=Kieran|website=AllMusic|access-date=2009-10-01}} The band's origin lies in a photo shoot that Yoshimi was asked to do for a magazine. She invited a few of her friends to join her, and they created a fake band for the shoot, which they later decided to make real.{{Cite web |title=OOIOO by Scott Davis - BOMB Magazine |url=https://bombmagazine.org/articles/ooioo/ |access-date=2022-04-12 |website=bombmagazine.org}} The band quickly gained attention by being the opening act for Sonic Youth in 1997 on their Japan tour.{{Cite web|url=https://ooioojp.bandcamp.com/album/gold-green|title=Gold & Green, by OOIOO|website=Ooioojp.bandcamp.com|access-date=2020-03-16}}
According to AllMusic's Kieran McCarthy "It's next to impossible to describe their sound, because — by design — it rarely follows consistent patterns". Some of their music has been described as having "a majestic ebb and flow that suggests natural wonders"{{cite web|last=Phares |first=Heather |url={{AllMusic|class=album|id=r791654|pure_url=yes}} |title=((( Gold and Green > Overview ))) |website=AllMusic |date=2005-09-13 |access-date=2009-10-01}} or a "witchy, tribal side". Either way, at any one time it may incorporate chanting and punchy drums, dancey polyrhythms{{cite web |last=Dodero |first=Camille |url=http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/archives/2007/03/live_ooioos_yos.php |archive-url=https://archive.today/20130205122330/http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/archives/2007/03/live_ooioos_yos.php |url-status=dead |archive-date=February 5, 2013 |title=New York — Sound of the City — Live: OOIOO's Yoshimi Doesn't Let Those Evil Robots Eat Me |website=Blogs.villagevoice.com |date=2007-03-21 |access-date=2009-10-01 }} atonal composition or psychedelia.{{cite web|url=http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/6579-ooioo/ |title=Interviews: OOIOO |website=Pitchfork.com |date=2007-04-05 |access-date=2009-10-01}}
