Background and recording

Oddments was announced on 14 January 2014, with "Vegemite" serving as the album's lead single. Lead vocalist Stu Mackenzie said that the song was "probably the most literal song [he's] ever written".{{Cite web |date=2014-01-14 |title=King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Announce New LP 'Oddments', Drop Single 'Vegemite' |url=https://musicfeeds.com.au/news/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-announce-new-lp-oddments-drop-single-vegemite/ |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=Music Feeds |last=Baroni |first=Nastassia |archive-date=23 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220123124759/https://musicfeeds.com.au/news/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-announce-new-lp-oddments-drop-single-vegemite/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |title=King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Announce New Album "Oddments" – Across The Ocean |url=http://acrosstheocean.com.au/news/king-gizzard-lizard-wizard-announce-new-album-oddments |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=acrosstheocean.com.au |date=14 January 2014 |language=en-US |archive-date=5 April 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200405215837/http://acrosstheocean.com.au/news/king-gizzard-lizard-wizard-announce-new-album-oddments |url-status=live }} Oddments consists of outtakes from the band's prior releases, with the album serving as a way to compile the songs without necessarily adhering to a sound or theme as the band had done up until that point;{{Cite web |date=2014-03-07 |title=An Analysis of 'Oddments' by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard |url=https://www.speakertv.com/news/latest-news/analysis-oddments-king-gizzard-lizard-wizard/ |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=SpeakerTV |language=en-US |last=Crosbie |first=Niamh |archive-date=26 November 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201126011358/https://www.speakertv.com/news/latest-news/analysis-oddments-king-gizzard-lizard-wizard/ |url-status=live }} the oddment nature of the songs (being leftovers from previous albums) gave the album its name. The album opener "Alluda Majaka" refers to and features an audio sample of the 1995 Telugu film of the same name. During production of the album, Mackenzie's laptop was stolen with the masters for several tracks on the album alongside a majority of the tracks from The Murlocs' debut album Loopholes, forcing both bands to rerecord the lost material.{{Cite web |date=2014-03-27 |title=King Gizzard, The Murlocs Lost "Entire Recordings" In Computer Robbery |url=https://tonedeaf.thebrag.com/king-gizzard-the-murlocs-lost-entire-recordings-in-computer-robbery/ |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=Tone Deaf |language=en-AU |last=McCarthy |first=Dylan |archive-date=18 June 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220618182441/https://tonedeaf.thebrag.com/king-gizzard-the-murlocs-lost-entire-recordings-in-computer-robbery/ |url-status=live }}

Oddments was King Gizzard's fourth album in 18 months, with some reviewers noting that the album's quality seemingly suffered from the rush to quickly turnaround new material.{{Cite web |date=2014-03-17 |title=King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard : Oddments |url=https://beat.com.au/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-oddments/ |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=Beat Magazine |language=en-AU |archive-date=24 October 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221024064707/https://beat.com.au/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-oddments/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |last=Telford |first=Brendan |date=2014-02-13 |title=King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard / Oddments |url=https://themusic.com.au/reviews/king-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-oddments-brendan-telford/BUAWGRgbGh0/13-02-14 |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=themusic.com.au |language=en |archive-date=24 October 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221024064706/https://themusic.com.au/reviews/king-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-oddments-brendan-telford/BUAWGRgbGh0/13-02-14 |url-status=live }} Reviewers and retrospectives on the band's discography also noted that the album was overall stylistically fractured and incohesive, something other releases of theirs had not been prior nor since,{{Cite web |last=Handke |first=Tobias |date=2020-11-19 |title=We rank every King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard album |url=https://purplesneakers.com.au/ |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=purplesneakers.com.au |language=en |archive-date=1 March 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230301042540/https://purplesneakers.com.au/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |date=2020-02-06 |title=Every single King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard album, ranked |url=https://happymag.tv/every-single-king-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-album-ranked/ |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=Happy Mag |language=en-US |last=Saunders |first=Luke |archive-date=16 August 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220816170206/https://happymag.tv/every-single-king-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-album-ranked/ |url-status=live }} although some reviewers and retrospectives also pointed out that songs had a pop lean to them.{{Cite web |last=Emery |first=Patrick |date=2014-02-27 |title=King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: Oddments |url=https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/music/king-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-oddments-20141014-3hzub.html |access-date=2022-06-18 |website=The Sydney Morning Herald |language=en |archive-date=18 June 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220618182405/https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/music/king-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-oddments-20141014-3hzub.html |url-status=live }}
