History

=2009–2010: Formation and early work=

The band was formed in 2009, when Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir decided to add additional members to her solo project, Songbird. Of Monsters and Men entered 2010's Músíktilraunir, an annual music competition held in Iceland, as a quartet, with Nanna (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Brynjar (electric guitar), Raggi (backing vocals, melodica, glockenspiel), and Arnar (backing vocals, melodica, glockenspiel, tambourine). Raggi came up with the band name.{{cite web |first=Tracie |last=Chan |title=An Interview with Of Monsters and Men with Nelson Nyabuto: On Monsters, Jugglers, & Their First US Tour |publisher=Austinist |date=1 March 2012 |url=http://austinist.com/2012/03/01/of_monsters_and_men_on_monsters_jug.php |access-date=13 June 2013 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130411013653/http://austinist.com/2012/03/01/of_monsters_and_men_on_monsters_jug.php |archive-date=11 April 2013 }}

Following Músiktilraunir, the quartet added two more members, Árni (accordion/keys, backing vocals) and Kristján (bass, backing vocals), and continued to tour in Iceland and work on new songs.{{cite web |url=http://mplayer.pastemagazine.com/issues/week-10/articles#article=/issues/week-10/articles/of-monsters-and-men-icelands-folk-pop-stars |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110924034329/http://mplayer.pastemagazine.com/issues/week-10/articles#article=/issues/week-10/articles/of-monsters-and-men-icelands-folk-pop-stars |url-status=dead |archive-date=24 September 2011 |title=Of Monsters and Men: Iceland's Folk-Pop Stars |publisher=Paste Magazine |date=Sep 2011 |access-date=10 March 2012 }}{{Better source needed|reason=The only reference mentioning Árni is archived and doesn't open.|date=November 2023}} They were invited to perform at the 2010 Iceland Airwaves festival, and it was there that the Seattle-based radio station KEXP recorded them performing "Little Talks", from a living-room session.{{cite web |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dw8qdmT_aY |title=Of Monsters and Men – Little Talks; KEXP |publisher=KEXP |date=16 October 2010 |access-date=7 February 2012 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120427124804/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dw8qdmT_aY |archive-date=27 April 2012 }}
