History

Pörtom was first mentioned as Pörttom, Pörteby in 1558. The name Pörtom is the old dative case form of the word pörte, a loanword from Finnish pirtti referring to a type of cottage. The village was also known as Pirttilä in Finnish.{{Cite web|title=SuomalainenPaikannimikirja_e-kirja_kuvallinen.pdf|url=https://kaino.kotus.fi/www/verkkojulkaisut/julk63/SuomalainenPaikannimikirja_e-kirja_kuvallinen.pdf|page=338|access-date=December 30, 2022|website=kaino.kotus.fi|language=fi}}

Pörtom was initially a part of the Närpes parish. Pörtom acquired its first church in 1696 and a priest in 1702. It became a separate parish in 1859, remaining separate until it was transferred back to Närpes in 1973.{{Cite web|title=Suomen Sukututkimusseura|url=https://hiski.genealogia.fi/seurakunnat/srk?CMD=SRK&ID=405&TYPE=HTML&LANG=FI|access-date=December 30, 2022|website=hiski.genealogia.fi|language=fi}}

The Berga glass factory was active in Pörtom between 1796 and 1883. It was one of Finland's largest glass factories in the 1840s.{{Cite web|title=Suomalaisia lasitehtaita|url=http://www.edu.fi/oppimateriaalit/esine_elaa/lasi/lasitehtaita.html|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20101016074747/http://www.edu.fi/oppimateriaalit/esine_elaa/lasi/lasitehtaita.html|archive-date=October 16, 2010|access-date=December 30, 2022|website=edu.fi|language=fi}}
