Critical reception
Exclaim! wrote that the album "shows the strains of a band running out of new ideas [although] the music is certainly not terrible and there are good moments, such as 'Baby Please Go' or '10,000 Feet'."{{Cite web|url=https://exclaim.ca/amparticle/beautiful_south-painting_it_red|title=Beautiful South Painting It Red|website=exclaim.ca}} The Washington Post wrote that it "does occasionally muster an assertive beat--in part thanks to the assistance of Norman 'Fatboy Slim' Cook, who formerly played with Heaton and Hemingway in the Housemartins."{{cite web |title=THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH "Painting It Red" Ark 21 |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/2000/10/13/the-beautiful-south-painting-it-red-ark-21/b1039ca1-cbdc-4745-9bf4-2cf1a4320b2b/ |website=The Washington Post |access-date=22 April 2021}}
