"Paloma Blanca" (Spanish for "white dove"), often called "Una Paloma Blanca", is a song written by Dutch musician George Baker (under his real name, Johannes Bouwens) and first recorded and released by his band, George Baker Selection. The single—the title track of the group's fifth album—was released in 1975 with "Dreamboat" (or "Dream Boat") as its B-side.{{cite AV media notes|title=Paloma Blanca|others=George Baker Selection|year=1975|type=Dutch 7-inch single vinyl disc|publisher=Negram|id=NG 496}} The song was a hit throughout Europe, reaching {{abbr|No.|Number}} 1 in Austria, Finland, Flanders, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland, and it also topped the charts of New Zealand and South Africa.

In the United States, the song became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Easy Listening Singles chart on 14 February 1976 (becoming that chart's overall No. 1 song for 1976), peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached No. 33 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. In Canada and the United Kingdom, "Paloma Blanca" peaked at No. 10, and in Australia, it reached No. 2. The song sold over two million copies worldwide.{{cite magazine |url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/70s/1975/BB-1975-10-25.pdf |title=George Baker |magazine=Billboard |volume=87 |issue=43 |page=G-3 |date=25 October 1975 |access-date=3 July 2020}}

Meaning

Baker has been quoted as saying the song is about "a poor South American farmer who works hard all day and then sits by a tree and dreams of being a white bird with its freedom."{{cite news |newspaper=Greeley Daily Tribune |issue=February 7, 1976 |page=11 |title=What's in a name? |url=https://newspaperarchive.com/greeley-daily-tribune-feb-07-1976-p-11/ |access-date=14 September 2019 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190913232837/http://newspaperarchive.com/greeley-daily-tribune-feb-07-1976-p-11/ |archive-date=13 September 2019}}

Cover versions

Following the George Baker Selection's success, the song was widely covered. In the UK, where the group took "Paloma Blanca" to a number 10 chart peak, the recording by Jonathan King achieved number five.{{Cite web|url=https://www.officialcharts.com/songs/jonathan-king-una-paloma-blanca/|title=UNA PALOMA BLANCA|date=6 September 1975|website=Official Charts}}

In 1976, English Scrumpy and Western band the Wurzels created a cover version titled "I Am a Cider Drinker" that contains a number of references to rural West Country life, including scrumpy, rabbit stew, combine harvesters and evenings at the local pub. The single was a number-three hit on the UK singles chart.{{cite web|url=http://www.musicweek.com/story.asp?storyCode=11443§ioncode=2|title=1000 number ones: The Seventies|date=17 January 2005|work=Music Week |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110813004910/http://www.musicweek.com/story.asp?storyCode=11443§ioncode=2 |archive-date=13 August 2011 |via=Wayback Machine}} A remastered version was produced in 2007, with an accompanying video.
