He played 279 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with five teams.

Playing career

As a youth, Traverse played in the 1988 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.{{cite web|url=https://www.publicationsports.com/ressources/files/439/Joueurs_Pro.pdf|title=Pee-Wee players who have reached NHL or WHA|year=2018|website=Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament|access-date=January 26, 2019}}

Traverse was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the third round, 50th overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to the San Jose Sharks on December 18, 2006, in exchange for Mathieu Biron.{{cite web| title = Biron heads to Montreal, Traverse to Sharks | publisher = ESPN | url = http://www.espn.com/nhl/news/story?id=2698630&campaign=rss&source=NHLHeadlines |date=February 15, 2006 |accessdate=December 15, 2006}} He never made an appearance with San Jose, playing for the Sharks' AHL affiliate, the Worcester Sharks for the better part of three seasons. He frequently played in the AHL between NHL stints.

After playing one season for DEG Metro Stars in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, Traverse signed with rival Hamburg Freezers to a one-year contract on March 19, 2010.{{cite web | url = http://www.mopo.de/news/traverse-wird-ein-freezer/-/5066732/5127540/-/index.html | archive-url = https://archive.today/20120907180356/http://www.mopo.de/news/traverse-wird-ein-freezer/-/5066732/5127540/-/index.html | url-status = dead | archive-date = September 7, 2012 |title=Traverse commits to the Freezers |language=German |date=March 19, 2010| publisher=mopo.de}}
