The Peak Downs Highway links the towns of Mackay and Clermont in the Australian state of Queensland.[http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Travel-and-transport/Maps-and-guides/Queensland-state-controlled-roads-and-region-maps.aspx Queensland Government - Department of Transport and Main Roads - Maps] It represents the main link between Queensland's Whitsunday Coast and the Central West region of the state. The highway runs for a total length of {{convert|266|km|mi}}, before joining the Gregory Highway (Highway A7, formerly Highway 55) south to Clermont, a total of {{convert|283|km|mi}}.{{cite map |title=Australia Road and 4WD Atlas|last=Hema |first=Maps|year=2007 |publisher=Hema Maps|location=Eight Mile Plains Queensland|isbn=978-1-86500-456-3|pages=10-11}} Major settlements served by this route include Walkerston, Nebo, Moranbah ({{convert|10|km|mi}} north of the highway, but the largest town along the route) and Clermont.

The ABC has described the road as "crucial to the national economy" but, reporting 550 crashes in 10 years, said that it had been likened to roads in the Third World. "Someone is killed or seriously injured on the Peak Downs Highway on average about once every two-and-a-half weeks," it said.{{cite web |url=https://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-05-23/mining-towns-say-deadly-highway-a-disgrace/4029018 |title=Mining towns say deadly highway a disgrace |website=ABC News |date=24 May 2012 |access-date=14 March 2023}} In December 2019 Mackay's Daily Mercury reported that 49 people had been killed and more than 1000 injured on the highway.{{cite web |url=https://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/mackay/local-road-is-highway-to-hell-as-death-toll-revealed/news-story/40d0fc77c8836b1e80fce8f2574e192c |title=Statistics reveal the Peak Downs Highway has killed 49 and injured more than 1000 |website=Daily Mercury via Courier Mail |date=16 December 2019 |access-date=14 March 2023}}

Highway conditions

The highway is notorious for the extremely dangerous conditions caused by its service as a primary access route for workers, fuel, machinery and other supplies to the coal mines of the Bowen Basin. The narrow two-lane highway is often congested with oversize loads (e.g. mining haul-trucks, dozers and excavators, tyres and buckets) and road trains, which presents a significant hazard and frustration to fatigued long-haul commuters (Drive-in, Drive-out mine workers) on the road.
