Penestomus is a genus of African araneomorph spiders in the family Penestomidae, and was first described by Eugène Louis Simon in 1902.{{cite journal| last=Simon| first=E.| year=1902| title=Descriptions de quelques arachnides nouveaux de la section de Cribellatés| journal=Bulletin de la Société Entomologique de France| pages=240–243| volume=1902| author-link=Eugène_Simon| doi=10.5962/bhl.part.19237| doi-access=free}} The genus was formerly included in the family Eresidae, but was elevated to its own family in 2010. It is now considered closer to Zodariidae.
