This place is one of the historic ports of Eastern (Gulf of Mannar) from 21 km distance of Ramanathapuram where Ibn Battuta, Marco Polo and other famous travellers visited. ibn Battuta mentioned this place as Fattan at his book Rihla.The port was called Parakirama Pattinam in the 10th century.[https://archive.org/stream/southindiahermuh00krisuoft#page/64/mode/2up South India and Her Muhammadan Invaders by Krishnaswami S. Aiyangar.]

In the 12th century, it was called Pavitra Manicka Pattinam. It was also called Ta Pa Tan by the famous Chinese traveller Wang Ta-Yuan in the 14th century.[http://jahubar.xtgem.com/Jali_Ppm1.PNG Science and civilisation in China, Vol. 6, Part 3. by Joseph Needham, Christian Daniels, Nicholas K. Menzies.] Now, it is called Periyapattinam, where thousands of Muslims live. Most Muslims consider themselves to be settler descendants of maritime traders who had business linking the Persian Gulf to the south Indian coast and Southeast Asia.

Periyapattinam is often described as one of the earliest Jewish settlements in southern India.{{Cite book |last=Gamliel |first=Ophira |url=https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9781802701715/html?lang=en&srsltid=AfmBOorK5jlGIHTfhle-ICI6iStSFtsYyDyDyc7jIkScAvmtbLrq1TiE |title=Judaism in South India, 849–1489: Relocating Malabar Jewry |date=2023 |publisher=ARC Humanities Press |isbn=9781802701715 |language=en |doi=}} A rare Jewish inscription (c. 1200-1250 AD), originally situated on the Periyapattinam beach, was discovered from Valantharavai in 2022 (Valantaravai inscription).{{Cite news |last=Sivarajah |first=Padmini |date=13 July 2022 |title=Stone Inscription of Oldest Synagogue in Tamil Nadu Found |url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/stone-inscription-of-oldest-synagogue-in-tamil-nadu-found/articleshow/92837874.cms |work=The Times of India}}

Cuisine

The food habits practised by the Periyapattinam people have similarities with Sri Lankan Tamil Muslim cuisine and Malay cuisine. For example, foods like vatlappam,Vatlappam Recipe http://www.indianfoodrecipes.co.in/egg-coconut-pudding Idiyappam are probably from Sri Lanka. Most of the dietary practices of people of Periyapattinam follow that of coastal dwellers i.e. seafood dependence.

Other foods include:
