Education

Rutledge received his BSc in chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Auckland in 1993. He received his MSc from the same institution with first class honours in chemistry in 1995. He left New Zealand in 1995 and obtained his DPhil at Magdalen College, Oxford working with Jack Edward Baldwin in 1999. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution until 2003.{{cite web |title=Rutledge Research Group - People |url=https://sydney.edu.au/science/chemistry/~rutledge/pjr.htm |website=sydney.edu.au |accessdate=3 August 2019}}{{cite web |title=Professor Peter Rutledge - The University of Sydney |url=https://sydney.edu.au/science/people/peter.rutledge.php |website=sydney.edu.au |publisher=University of Sydney |accessdate=3 August 2019}}

Career and research

Rutledge has held college lectureships at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 2000 to 2001 and Somerville College, Oxford, from 2001 to 2002. In 2003, he moved to become a lecturer at the Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology at University College Dublin. In 2006, he relocated to the University of Sydney and was an associate professor during the years 2014 to 2019. In 2019, he was promoted to a full professor of chemistry.{{cite web |last1=Sydney |first1=The University of |title=Professor Peter Rutledge - The University of Sydney |url=https://sydney.edu.au/science/people/peter.rutledge.php |website=sydney.edu.au}} At the University of Sydney, Rutledge regularly collaborated with the group of Matthew H. Todd until his departure to University College London in 2018.{{cite journal |last1=Spain |first1=Malcolm |last2=Wong |first2=Joseph K.-H. |last3=Nagalingam |first3=Gayathri |last4=Batten |first4=James M. |last5=Hortle |first5=Elinor |last6=Oehlers |first6=Stefan H. |last7=Jiang |first7=Xiao Fan |last8=Murage |first8=Hasini E. |last9=Orford |first9=Jack T. |last10=Crisologo |first10=Patrick |last11=Triccas |first11=James A. |last12=Rutledge |first12=Peter J. |last13=Todd |first13=Matthew H. |title=Antitubercular Bis-Substituted Cyclam Derivatives: Structure–Activity Relationships and in Vivo Studies |journal=Journal of Medicinal Chemistry |date=2018 |volume=61 |issue=8 |pages=3595–3608 |doi=10.1021/acs.jmedchem.7b01569 |pmid=29558124 |issn=0022-2623|hdl=2123/22236 |hdl-access=free }}{{cite journal |last1=Todd |first1=Matthew H. |last2=Watkinson |first2=Michael |last3=Rutledge |first3=Peter J. |last4=Lau |first4=Yu Heng |title=Chemical sensors that incorporate click-derived triazoles |journal=Chemical Society Reviews |date=2011 |volume=40 |issue=5 |pages=2848–2866 |doi=10.1039/C0CS00143K |pmid=21380414 |language=en |issn=1460-4744}}{{cite journal |last1=Lau |first1=Yu Heng |last2=Price |first2=Jason R. |last3=Todd |first3=Matthew H. |last4=Rutledge |first4=Peter J. |title=A Click Fluorophore Sensor that Can Distinguish CuII and HgII via Selective Anion-Induced Demetallation |journal=Chemistry – A European Journal |date=2011 |volume=17 |issue=10 |pages=2850–2858 |doi=10.1002/chem.201002477 |pmid=21305620 |language=en |issn=1521-3765}}{{cite journal |last1=Ast |first1=Sandra |last2=Rutledge |first2=Peter J. |last3=Todd |first3=Matthew H. |title=Reversing the Triazole Topology in a Cyclam-Triazole-Dye Ligand Gives a 10-Fold Brighter Signal Response to Zn2+ in Aqueous Solution |journal=European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry |date=2012 |volume=2012 |issue=34 |pages=5611–5615 |doi=10.1002/ejic.201201072 |language=en |issn=1099-0682}}{{cite journal |last1=Rutledge |first1=Peter J. |last2=Todd |first2=Matthew H. |last3=Turner |first3=Peter |last4=Tang |first4=Cyril |last5=Wong |first5=Joseph K.-H. |last6=Yu |first6=Mingfeng |title=Efficient deprotection of F-BODIPY derivatives: removal of BF2 using Brønsted acids |journal=Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry |date=2015 |volume=11 |issue=1 |pages=37–41 |doi=10.3762/bjoc.11.6 |pmid=25670990 |pmc=4311716 |language=en |issn=1860-5397}}{{cite journal |last1=Wong |first1=Joseph |last2=Todd |first2=Matthew |last3=Rutledge |first3=Peter |title=Recent Advances in Macrocyclic Fluorescent Probes for Ion Sensing |journal=Molecules |date=2017 |volume=22 |issue=2 |pages=200 |doi=10.3390/molecules22020200 |pmid=28125069 |issn=1420-3049|doi-access=free |pmc=6155713 }}{{cite journal |last1=Yu |first1=Mingfeng |last2=Yu |first2=Qun |last3=Rutledge |first3=Peter J. |last4=Todd |first4=Matthew H. |title=A Fluorescent "Allosteric Scorpionand" Complex Visualizes a Biological Recognition Event |journal=ChemBioChem |date=2013 |volume=14 |issue=2 |pages=224–229 |doi=10.1002/cbic.201200637 |pmid=23303717 |language=en |issn=1439-7633|url=https://ses.library.usyd.edu.au/handle/2123/21518 |url-access=subscription }}
