Phrygilus is a genus of mainly Andean seed-eating tanagers commonly known as sierra finches. Phrygilos means finch in Ancient Greek. Traditionally classified in the bunting and American sparrow family Emberizidae, more recent studies have shown them to belong in the Thraupidae.See Burns et al. (2003) & Klicka et al. (2007)

Taxonomy and species list

The genus Phrygilus was introduced in 1844 by the German ornithologist Jean Cabanis with the grey-hooded sierra finch as the type species.{{ cite journal | last1=von Tschudi | first1=Johann Jakob | author1-link=Johann Jakob von Tschudi | last2=Cabanis | first2=Jean | author2-link=Jean Cabanis | year=1844 | title=Avium conspectus quae in Republica Peruana reperiuntur et pleraeque observatae vel collectae sunt in itinere | language=Latin | journal=Archiv für Naturgeschichte | volume=10 | issue=1 | pages=262–317 [289–290]| url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/32910946 }}{{ cite book | editor-last=Paynter | editor-first=Raymond A. The genus formerly included additional species. A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2014 found that the genus was highly polyphyletic and in the resulting reorganization members of the genus were moved to Geospizopsis, Rhopospina, Porphyrospiza and Idiopsar.{{cite journal| last1=Burns | first1=K.J. | last2=Shultz | first2=A.J. | last3=Title | first3=P.O. | last4=Mason | first4=N.A. | last5=Barker | first5=F.K. | last6=Klicka | first6=J. | last7=Lanyon | first7=S.M. | last8=Lovette | first8=I.J. | year=2014 | title=Phylogenetics and diversification of tanagers (Passeriformes: Thraupidae), the largest radiation of Neotropical songbirds | journal=Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution| volume=75| pages=41–77 | doi=10.1016/j.ympev.2014.02.006 | pmid=24583021 | bibcode=2014MolPE..75...41B | url=https://digitalcommons.lsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3613&context=biosci_pubs | url-access=subscription }}{{ cite journal | last1=Burns | first1=K.J. | last2=Unitt | first2=P. | last3=Mason | first3=N.A. | year=2016 | title=A genus-level classification of the family Thraupidae (Class Aves: Order Passeriformes) | journal=Zootaxa | volume=4088 | issue=3 | pages=329–354 | doi=10.11646/zootaxa.4088.3.2 | pmid=27394344 }} The genus now contains four species.
