Pieter "Piet" Adema (born 6 November 1964) is a Dutch politician. From 3 October 2022 to 2 July 2024, he served as the minister of agriculture, nature and food quality on behalf of the Christian Union (CU) in the fourth Rutte cabinet.{{Cite web |date=2023-07-20 |title=Drenthe vraagt minister hertenkampen toe te blijven staan |url=https://dvhn.nl/drenthe/Drenthe-vraagt-minister-hertenkampen-toe-te-blijven-staan-28551090.html |access-date=2023-07-20 |website=Dagblad van het Noorden |language=nl-NL}}

Tenure

Following the collapse of the fourth Rutte cabinet in July 2023, Adema continued serving as demissionary minister. He sent a plan to the House of Representatives in April 2024 to tackle the Dutch manure crisis, a manure surplus that would likely result from the Netherlands losing its exemption in 2026 from a limit in the European Union's (EU) Nitrates Directive on the fertilization of farmland with manure. Adema's proposal included a buyout program and would lead to a decrease in the livestock population. The PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB – representing a majority in the House – called on the minister to hold off the plans due to the ongoing cabinet formation.{{Cite news |url = https://fd.nl/politiek/1513031/minister-adema-wil-mest-en-productierechten-veehouders-bij-verkoop-afromen |url-access = subscription |date = 5 April 2024 |last = Sie |first = Puck |access-date = 7 April 2024 |language = nl |website = Het Financieele Dagblad |title = Minister Adema wil mest- en productierechten veehouders bij verkoop afromen |trans-title = Minister Adema wants to prune away manure and production rights of cattle farmers when sold }}{{Cite web |url = https://www.rvo.nl/onderwerpen/mest/derogatie |access-date = 7 April 2024 |language = nl |date = 6 November 2019 |title = Derogatie |trans-title = Derogation |website = Netherlands Enterprise Agency }}

Adema is known for his push for animal welfare, an example of this can be seen in his work on a ban on owning animals with harmful external characteristics, such as a cat with folded ears or a dog with a short snout..{{cite news |date=20 January 2023 |title=Netherlands working on a ban on flat nosed dogs and folded ear cats to prevent animal suffering |url=https://nltimes.nl/2023/01/20/netherlands-working-ban-flat-nosed-dogs-folded-ear-cats-prevent-animal-suffering |accessdate=13 August 2024 |publisher=The Holland Times}}

Additionally, in 2024, Adema started working on a ban on "puppy yoga".{{cite news |date=31 May 2024 |title=Puppy yoga could soon be banned in the Netherlands, says Cabinet minister |url=https://nltimes.nl/2024/05/31/puppy-yoga-soon-banned-netherlands-says-cabinet-minister |accessdate=2 June 2024 |publisher=The Holland Times}}

His term as minister ended on 2 July 2024, when the Schoof cabinet was sworn in.{{Cite news |url = https://nos.nl/collectie/13962/artikel/2527025-ministers-en-staatssecretarissen-kabinet-schoof-beedigd |date = 2 July 2024 |access-date = 2 July 2024 |language = nl |website = NOS |title = Ministers en staatssecretarissen kabinet-Schoof beëdigd |trans-title = Ministers and state secretaries of Schoof cabinet sworn in }}
