History

Polska Agencja Prasowa S.A. was incorporated in 1918 as the Polish Telegraphic Agency (Polska Agencja Telegraficzna, PAT) which makes it one of the world's oldest wire services.{{Cite web| url=https://dzieje.pl/aktualnosci/polska-agencja-prasowa-od-sluzby-komunizmowi-po-dziennikarska-normalnosc-0 |language=pl |title=Polska Agencja Prasowa – od służby komunizmowi po dziennikarską normalność |website=dzieje.pl |access-date=30 December 2022}} PAT ran 14 news bulletins in several languages. In 1925, it launched a regular newsreel and offered a photo service since the 1930s.{{Cite web |title=Polska Agencja Telegraficzna, Encyklopedia PWN: źródło wiarygodnej i rzetelnej wiedzy |url=https://encyklopedia.pwn.pl/haslo/;3959722 |access-date=2023-01-08 |website=encyklopedia.pwn.pl |language=pl}}

In 1944, following the Soviet entry into German-occupied Poland during World War II, the company was taken over by the Polish communists and set up under its current name as the local alternative to the still functioning Polish Telegraphic Agency loyal to the Polish government in exile from 1939 in Paris and London.{{Cite web| url=https://wiadomosci.onet.pl/kraj/polska-agencja-prasowa-ma-95-lat/xqwg0 |language=pl |title=Polska Agencja Prasowa ma 95 lat |access-date=30 December 2022}} Under the Polish People's Republic, PAP was a government institution and the official communist mouthpiece. In 1990, after the fall of communism in Poland, the company was reformed and in 1991 the original PTA was finally merged into PAP to form the present-day Agency.

PAP has gradually expanded the number of its news desks, journalists and correspondents. In 1993, the agency launched satellite transmission of its services{{Cite web |url=https://depesza.fm/polska-agencja-prasowa-co-to-za-instytucja-i-czym-sie-zajmuje-1637930137 |language=pl |title=Polska Agencja Prasowa - co to za instytucja i czym się zajmuje? |website=depesza.fm |author=Olga Szarycka |access-date=30 December 2022}} and started online news distribution in 1995. In 2001, it joined the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA).{{Cite web|title=About Us|url=https://www.pap.pl/en/about-us|access-date=2022-01-13|website=Polska Agencja Prasowa SA|language=en}} In the early 2000s, on top of its regular international coverage, PAP had field reporters covering the war in Iraq.{{Cite web|title=Polskie Radio i PAP zostają w Iraku|url=https://www.press.pl/tresc/3181,polskie-radio-i-pap-zostaja-w-iraku|access-date=2022-01-13|website=Press.pl|language=pl}}

Since 2019, PAP owns Detektyw (The Detective) - a popular monthly magazine on crime that the agency has taken over along with the state owned PWR publishing company.{{Cite web |title=Polska Agencja Prasowa nadal będzie wydawać magazyn "Detektyw" |url=https://www.press.pl/tresc/60009,pap-w-dalszym-ciagu-bedzie-wydawac-magazyn-_detektyw_ |access-date=2023-01-08 |website=Press.pl |language=pl}}

PAP was one of the public media companies affected by the 19 to 20 December 2023 takeover of Polish public media by the recently elected October 15 Coalition. On 27 December 2023, Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz placed PAP and other public media bodies into liquidation after Polish president Andrzej Duda vetoed a bill containing funding for public media bodies; the liquidation was not intended to impact PAP's day-to-day running.{{cite web |last1=Tilles |first1=Daniel |title=Polish government puts public media into liquidation amid dispute with president |url=https://notesfrompoland.com/2023/12/27/polish-government-puts-public-media-into-liquidation-amid-dispute-with-president/ |website=Notes from Poland |access-date=27 December 2023 |date=27 December 2023}}{{cite web |last1=Easton |first1=Adam |title=Polish state TV and radio to go into liquidation |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-67828421 |website=BBC News |access-date=28 December 2023 |date=27 December 2023}}{{cite web |last1=Lasota-Krawczyk |first1=Justyna |title=TVP, PR i PAP w stanie likwidacji. = The First News =

In May 2018, PAP launched an English-language news website called The First News that focused mainly on events in Poland, claiming that international media did not always portray the country "entirely accurately" and with the goal of reaching "specific opinion-forming circles" with the help of social media."{{cite web |date=4 May 2018 |title=The Polish Press Agency's new English-language portal, called 'The First News', launched on Thursday |url=https://polandin.com/37070892/polish-press-agency-launches-news-service-in-english |work=PolandIn.com}} On 29 January 2024, following PAP being put into liquidation over a month earlier, it was announced that The First News would be shut down on 15 February and its content would not be updated in the interim; PAP's acting editor-in-chief Marek Błoński said that financial analysis "confirmed the unprofitability of this project, and the substantive analysis led to the conclusion that running such a portal is not directly part of the tasks falling within the public mission of PAP", and that the website had not met its primary goals since it did not have "any measurable impact on Poland's good image among recipients".{{cite web |last1=Tilles |first1=Daniel |title=Polish Press Agency's English-language service The First News closed down |url=https://notesfrompoland.com/2024/01/29/polish-press-agencys-english-language-service-the-first-news-closed-down/ |website=Notes from Poland |access-date=29 January 2024 |date=29 January 2024}}

Notable journalists

For many years the celebrated travel writer Ryszard Kapuściński worked as a field reporter for PAP; his posting as the agency's first Africa correspondent provided the material and inspiration for many of his later writings.

Many other prominent Polish journalists and intellectuals worked for PAP at some point of their careers. That includes Wojciech Jagielski{{Cite web|title=Wojciech Jagielski odchodzi z PAP|url=https://www.press.pl/tresc/49672,wojciech-jagielski-odchodzi-z-pap|access-date=2022-01-13|website=Press.pl|language=pl}}{{Cite web|title=Wojciech Jagielski po pięciu latach odchodzi z PAP|url=https://www.wirtualnemedia.pl/artykul/wojciech-jagielski-po-pieciu-latach-odchodzi-z-pap|access-date=2022-01-13|website=www.wirtualnemedia.pl|language=pl}} who has won acclaim for his reportage from conflict zones in the Transcaucasus, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Africa, renowned lexicographer and publisher Władysław Kopaliński,{{Cite web|title=O papowcach po nazwisku|url=https://biznes.pap.pl/pl/news/search/info/15215530,o-papowcach-po-nazwisku|access-date=2022-01-13|website=biznes.pap.pl|language=pl}} author, war correspondent and Poland's ambassador to India Krzysztof Mroziewicz,{{Cite web|last=S.A|first=Wirtualna Polska Media|date=2010-08-25|title=Krzysztof Mroziewicz|url=https://ksiazki.wp.pl/krzysztof-mroziewicz-6149083548100737c|access-date=2022-01-13|website=ksiazki.wp.pl|language=pl}} travel writer and sailor Leonid Teliga as well as journalist, columnist and essayist Leopold Unger{{Cite web|title=Biografia - LEOPOLD UNGER|url=https://kulturaparyska.com/en/people/show/leopold_unger/biography|access-date=2022-01-13|website=Kultura Paryska - LEOPOLD UNGER}}{{Cite web|title=Zmarł znany dziennikarz i publicysta Leopold Unger|url=https://dzieje.pl/kultura-i-sztuka/zmarl-znany-dziennikarz-i-publicysta-leopold-unger|access-date=2022-01-13|website=dzieje.pl|language=pl}}{{Cite web|title=Zmarł Leopold Unger|url=https://www.rp.pl/wydarzenia/art14019731-zmarl-leopold-unger|access-date=2022-01-13|website=Rzeczpospolita|language=pl}} who reported for the agency from Havana during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
