"Pork and Beans" is a song by the American alternative rock band Weezer, released on the group's 2008 self-titled album Weezer, also known as the Red Album. It was released to radio on April 22, 2008{{cite web|url=http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=16771 |title=FMQB Airplay Archive: Modern Rock |publisher=Friday Morning Quarterback Album Report, Incorporated |access-date=October 31, 2016 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130322142732/http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=16771 |archive-date=March 22, 2013 }} and released in digital form on April 24.{{cite web|last=Koch |first=Karl |url=http://weezer.com/news/default.aspx/nid/13443 |title=04/18/08 Triunfa Del Fjord |publisher=Weezer.com |date=2008-04-18 |access-date=2008-04-21 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080420144105/http://www.weezer.com/news/default.aspx/nid/13443 |archive-date=2008-04-20 |url-status=dead }} The track debuted at number 19 on Billboard{{'}}s Modern Rock chart, and spent eleven weeks at number one. The song charted in many countries such as Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

A music video of the song, which incorporated many YouTube celebrities and memes with the band, was premiered on YouTube and was one of the most popular videos in the weeks following its release. The video won a Grammy Award for Best Music Video at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards.

Writing and inspiration

Rivers Cuomo, lead singer and guitarist for Weezer, wrote the song in reaction to a meeting with Geffen executives, who told the band members that they needed to record more commercial material.{{cite web | url = http://www.uncut.co.uk/news/weezer/news/11449|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110519171213/http://www.uncut.co.uk/news/weezer/news/11449|archive-date=2011-05-19 | title = Weezer Make First New Album Track Available | work = Uncut | access-date = 2008-04-21}}

Cuomo remarked, "I came out of it pretty angry. But ironically, it inspired me to write another song."{{cite news |title=Spring Album Preview |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/pork-and-beans-weezer |work=Issue #1050 |publisher=Rolling Stone |page=32 |access-date=2017-09-08 |archive-date=2018-02-10 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180210202149/https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/pork-and-beans-weezer |url-status=dead }} Jacknife Lee produced the track with the band in early 2008 in what was the third and final recording session for the album.{{cite web | url =http://www.antimusic.com/news/08/may/13Weezer_CD_Coming_3_Weeks_Early.shtml| title = Weezer CD Coming 3 Weeks Early | publisher =antiMUSIC.com |date=2008-05-13 | access-date = 2008-05-13}} The many references to popular culture in the song are said to be a "statement of defiance" according to Internet reviewer David Ritter, who later describes it to be an "anti-anthem anthem" that opens up a "broad space for critical exploration of what it means to be an aging band in the major label system".

Composition

According to the director of the video for "Pork and Beans", the song is about "the idea of being yourself, of being happy with who you are". In the album notes, Cuomo compares this to Timbaland's music, "It actually sounds like a Timbaland kind of production; he has little baby crying type of sounds."Weezer (The Red Album) Deluxe Edition album notes. A reference is also made to Timbaland in the second verse with the line "Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the chart".{{cite web| last = DeLuca| first = Dan| url = http://blogs.phillynews.com/inquirer/inthemix/2008/05/pork_and_beans.html| title = The Way To Reach The Top Of The Chart| work = Philly News| date = 2008-05-27| access-date = 2009-08-26| archive-url = https://archive.today/20120709044106/http://blogs.phillynews.com/inquirer/inthemix/2008/05/pork_and_beans.html| archive-date = 2012-07-09| url-status = dead}} The song similarly refers to items such as Rogaine and Oakley sunglasses.

Reception

The song has been generally well received by critics. Many reviewers were pleased with what they saw as a return-to-form sound reminiscent of the Blue Album (1994) and Pinkerton (1996) albums.{{cite web | last =Ritter | first =David | url = http://www.cokemachineglow.com/track_review/3430/weezer | title = Track Reviews: Weezer: Pork and Beans | publisher =Cokemachineglow | date=2008-04-19 |access-date = 2008-04-21 |archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20080502232409/http://www.cokemachineglow.com/track_review/3430/weezer |archive-date = 2008-05-02}}{{cite web | last =Gresehover | first =Ehren | url = http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/04/weezer_return_to_their_blue_pe.html | title = Weezer Return to Their Blue Period | work = New York Magazine | date=2008-04-14 |access-date = 2008-04-21}}{{cite web | url = http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20080416/BLOG21/972565622 | title = Hear It Now: Weezer's Single "Pork and Beans" | work = The Herald | date=2008-04-16 |access-date = 2008-04-21}}{{cite web | last =Goodman | first =William | url = https://www.spin.com/2008/04/new-weezer-album-out-june-24/ | title = New Weezer Album Out June 24 | work = Spin | date=2008-04-21 |access-date = 2008-04-21}} Pitchfork Media writer Marc Hogan gave the song a positive review and described the song as, "a catchy, self-referential rocker, with the buzzsaw guitars and big choruses of Weezer's glory days, and that familiar, self-assured lameness."{{cite web|last=Hogan |first=Marc |url=http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/download/50004-weezer-pork-and-beans-stream |title=Pitchfork Forkcast: New Music: Weezer: "Pork and Beans" |publisher=Pitchfork Media |date=2008-04-17 |access-date=2008-04-21 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080421011940/http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/download/50004-weezer-pork-and-beans-stream |archive-date=2008-04-21 |url-status=dead }} Simon Vozick-Levinson of Entertainment Weekly also gave the song a positive review, saying "That chunka-chunka guitar hook is pure [Weezer] gold, so much so that I didn't focus on Rivers Cuomo's very clever lyrics at first."{{cite magazine | last =Vozick-Levinson | first =Simon | url = http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2008/04/weezer-single.html | title = Snap Judgment: Weezer's Delectable 'Pork and Beans' | magazine = Entertainment Weekly | date=2008-04-17 | access-date = 2008-04-21}} Stereogum was also impressed with the song, stating it was a "sweet, savory dose of self-referential, self-deprecating Weezer rock ... =Commercial performance=

In terms of chart performance, "Pork and Beans" is one of Weezer's most successful singles in its 25-year career. Debuting at number 19, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts in only its third week on the charts. It became the group's ninth Top 10 hit on this chart and third number one overall and spent 11 weeks at number one,{{cite magazine | last =Hasty | first =Katie | url =http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1045471/leona-lewis-holds-onto-hot-100-no-1 | title = Leona Lewis Holds Onto Hot 100 No. 1 | magazine =Billboard |date=2008-05-08 | access-date = 2009-09-02}}{{cite web | url =http://musicremedy.com/w/Weezer/album/self-titled-5170.html | title = Weezer - self-titled | publisher =Music Remedy | access-date = 2009-09-02}} making it one of only 17 songs to ever sit at number one on that particular chart for 10 weeks or longer and one of three songs to have spent 11 weeks at number one. It also represented its fastest rising single ever, reaching number one after a mere 11 days after release. It debuted at number 39 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, where it is peaked at number 25 and debuted in the Billboard Hot 100 at number 84 with 17,000 downloads of the song on iTunes and peaked at number 64.{{cite web | last =Molanphy | first =Chris | url =http://idolator.com/386650/forever-leavin-pork--beans-big-chart-moves-by-summer-single-contenders| title = Forever Leavin' Pork & Beans: Big Chart Moves By Summer Single Contenders | publisher =Idolator.com |date=2008-05-02 | access-date = 2008-05-08}}{{cite magazine | last =Hasty | first =Katie | url =http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1045688/leona-lewis-regains-no-1-on-hot-100 | title = Leona Lewis Regains No. 1 On Hot 100 | magazine = Billboard |date=2008-05-01 | access-date = 2009-09-02}} "Pork and Beans" was voted number one on Toronto radio station 102.1 the Edge's list of Top 102 Songs of 2008.{{cite web | url = http://www.edge.ca/Music/Countdowns/2008Top102Songs.aspx | title = Top 102 Songs of 2008 | publisher = 102.1 The Edge | date = 2008-12-31 | access-date = 2009-08-21 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20090414204849/http://www.edge.ca/Music/Countdowns/2008Top102Songs.aspx | archive-date = 2009-04-14 | url-status = dead }} This song was number 30 on Rolling Stone{{'}}s list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008.{{#tag:ref|"[https://web.archive.org/web/20081229022442/http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/24947047/the_100_best_singles_of_2008/8 The 100 Best Songs of 2008]". The video shares some thematic similarities with the music video for the Barenaked Ladies single "Sound of Your Voice", which also featured multiple YouTube celebrities. According to Cullen, the video was to be a "celebration of that creativity", an idea that went over well with the members of the band. Cullen wanted to embrace the concept of "about being happy with who you are". Cullen hopes that the video will be "a living thing on the Internet"; as the video itself was a mash-up of Weezer's favorite stuff, Cullen hopes others will use the video to create their own mash-ups. The YouTube celebrities were flown into Los Angeles, California to work with the band for the four-day shooting of the video. The video, which quickly became popular, reached more than four million viewers in its first week and was that week's most-watched video.{{cite magazine | url = http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/05/director-behind.html | title = Weezer's Memetastic Video Director Spills the 'Pork and Beans' | magazine = Wired | date = 2008-05-27 | access-date = 2008-05-27 | first= Jenna | last = Wortham }}{{cite web | url = https://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2008-05-28-weezer-youtube-pork-beans_N.htm | title = YouTube stars, Weezer dine out on 'Pork & Beans' | work = USA Today | date = 2008-05-29 | access-date = 2008-05-29 | first= Mike | last = Snider}}{{cite web | url = http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20202462,00.html | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20080530014552/http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20202462,00.html | url-status = dead | archive-date = May 30, 2008 | title =Viral YouTube Hit 'Pork and Beans' Shoots to No. 1 | work = People Magazine | date = 2008-05-27 | access-date = 2008-05-28 | first = Cynthia | last = Wang }} It was the most popular video of the month in June, reaching 7.3 million views by June 16, 2008.{{cite web | url = http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/6/who_pulled_the_plug_on_weezers_pork_and_beans | title = Who Pulled The Plug On Weezer's "Pork And Beans" YouTube Video? | date = 2008-06-16 | access-date = 2008-06-18 | first = Dan | last = Frommer | publisher = Silicon Valley Insider | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20080619223339/http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/6/who_pulled_the_plug_on_weezers_pork_and_beans | archive-date = 2008-06-19 | url-status = dead }}{{cite magazine | url = http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/05/net-gorges-on-w.html | title = Net Gorges on Weezer's 'Pork and Beans' -- but Will It Blend? | magazine = Wired | first = Lewis | last = Wallace | date = 2008-05-24 | access-date = 2008-05-24}} It was nominated for Best Editing for the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards{{cite web | url = http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1593631/20080827/west_kanye.jhtml | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20080828113014/http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1593631/20080827/west_kanye.jhtml | url-status = dead | archive-date = August 28, 2008 | title = Kanye West, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Katy Perry Videos Pick Up More VMA Nominations | date = 2008-08-27 | access-date = 2008-08-28 | first = Chris | last = Harris | publisher = MTV }} and for Favorite Online Sensation at the 35th People's Choice Awards.{{cite web|url=http://www.pcavote.com/pca/history.jsp?year=2009 |title=People's Choice Awards Past Nominees & Winners: 2009 |access-date=2008-12-31 |work=PCAvote.com |publisher=Sycamore Productions |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081229073907/http://www.pcavote.com/pca/history.jsp?year=2009 |archive-date=2008-12-29 |url-status=dead }} The video won a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video at the 51st Grammy Awards Show.{{cite web|url=http://www.grammy.com/Grammy_awards/51st_show/list.aspx#31 |title=The 51st Annual Grammy Awards Winners List |access-date=2009-02-09 |date=2009-02-09 |work=Grammy.com |publisher=The Recording Academy |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090207085806/http://www.grammy.com/Grammy_Awards/51st_Show/list.aspx |archive-date=2009-02-07 |url-status=dead }}
