Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen (born May 17, 1941) is a Danish medicinal chemist who studies the glutamatergic, GABAergic, and cholinergic neurotransmitter systems and drugs acting on these systems.{{cite journal | vauthors = Bøgesø KP | title = Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen: a giant in medicinal chemistry research | journal = Neurochem Res | volume = 39 | issue = 10 | pages = 1847–1849 | date = October 2014 | pmid = 25227749 | doi = 10.1007/s11064-014-1437-5 | url = }}{{cite journal | last=Bräuner-Osborne | first=Hans | last2=Schousboe | first2=Arne | title=Introduction to Special Issue in Honor of Professor Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen | journal=Neurochemical Research | volume=39 | issue=10 | date=2014 | issn=0364-3190 | doi=10.1007/s11064-014-1408-x | pages=1845–1846}}{{cite web | last=Morris | first=Hamilton | title=Gaboxadol, by Hamilton Morris | website=Harper's Magazine | date=18 June 2021 | url=https://harpers.org/archive/2013/08/gaboxadol/ | access-date=10 February 2025}}{{cite podcast | url=https://www.patreon.com/posts/podcast-36-with-60339541 | title=PODCAST 36: An Amanita Christmas with Dr. Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen | website=The Hamilton Morris Podcast | publisher=Patreon | host=Hamilton Morris | date=25 December 2021 | time= | access-date=10 February 2025 | quote= }}{{cite web | title=Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen | website=University of Copenhagen Research Portal | date=14 February 2013 | url=https://researchprofiles.ku.dk/en/persons/povl-krogsgaard-larsen | access-date=10 February 2025}} He is known for discovering and developing the AMPA receptor agonist AMPA and the Amanita muscaria- or muscimol-derived GABAA receptor agonist THIP (gaboxadol), among many other scientific contributions. Some other notable drugs he has developed include the GABAA receptor agonist isoguvacine and the GABA reuptake inhibitors nipecotic acid and guvacine (which led to the subsequent independent development of tiagabine). Krogsgaard-Larsen is considered to be a giant in the field of medicinal chemistry and to be the most impactful Danish medicinal chemist. An autobiography for Krogsgaard-Larsen was published in 2011.
