Prophalangopsis is a South Asian insect genus, in the family Prophalangopsidae, distantly related to crickets and other Ensifera, erected by Francis Walker in 1869.{{cite book |last=Walker |first=Francis |author-link=Francis Walker (entomologist) |title=Catalogue of the specimens of Dermaptera Saltatoria and supplement of the Blattari in the collection of the British Museum |publisher=The British Museum |publication-place=London |year=1869 |volume=Part 1 |doi=10.5962/bhl.title.8149 |doi-access=free |pages=100–101 |oclc=469668702 |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/36510#page/118/mode/2up}} There is one species: Prophalangopsis obscura, which is a winged insect species found in North India and the Tibetan Plateau. It is one of only a few surviving species in the family Prophalangopsidae. F. Walker described it in 1869 from a single male specimen from India.{{efn|Walker identified the location as Hindustan, which is present-day India. Bioacoustic modeling
In 2022, researchers attempted to recreate the call that P. obscura would make with its legs by using 3D scanning, microscopy, and a Laser Doppler vibrometer.{{cite web |last=Tamisiea |first=Jack |title=Modern and Ancient Crickets May Sing the Same Song |website=The New York Times |date=2022-08-10 |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/10/science/singing-insect-wing-sound.html |access-date=2022-08-11}}{{cite journal |last1=Woodrow |first1=Charlie |last2=Baker |first2=Ed |last3=Jonsson |first3=Thorin |last4=Montealegre-Z |first4=Fernando |title=Reviving the sound of a 150-year-old insect: The bioacoustics of Prophalangopsis obscura (Ensifera: Hagloidea) |journal=PLOS ONE |publisher=Public Library of Science (PLoS) |volume=17 |issue=8 |date=2022-08-10 |issn=1932-6203 |doi=10.1371/journal.pone.0270498 |doi-access=free |page=e0270498|pmid=35947546 |pmc=9365155 |bibcode=2022PLoSO..1770498W }}
