Taxonomy

Quercus hypargyrea was first described as Quercus glauca var. hypargyrea in 1900 by Ludwig Diels, who attributed the name to Karl Otto von Seemen. It was raised to a full species in 1992.{{citation |title=Quercus hypargyrea (Seemen ex Diels) C.C.Huang & Y.T.Chang |work=The International Plant Names Index |url=https://www.ipni.org/n/969371-1 |access-date=2023-02-23 }} Independently, the species was described as Cyclobalanopsis multinervis in 1963. In 1998, this was transferred to Quercus as "Quercus multinervis". However, this name had already been published in 1859 for a fossil species, so is illegitimate.{{citation |title=Cyclobalanopsis multinervis W.C.Cheng & T.Hong |work=The International Plant Names Index |url=https://www.ipni.org/n/928334-1 |access-date=2023-02-23 }}

It is placed in subgenus Cerris, section Cyclobalanopsis.{{Citation |last1=Denk |first1=Thomas |last2=Grimm |first2=Guido W. |last3=Manos |first3=Paul S. |last4=Deng |first4=Min |last5=Hipp |first5=Andrew L. |date=2017 |title=Appendix 2.1: An updated infrageneric classification of the oaks |website=figshare |doi=10.6084/m9.figshare.5547622.v1 |url=https://figshare.com/articles/dataset/Appendix_2_1_________An_updated_infrageneric_classification_of_the_oaks/5547622/1 |access-date=2023-02-18 |format=xls |name-list-style=amp }}
