Description

Raggedtop Mountain is located {{convert|28|mi|km}} southeast of Anchorage and {{convert|5|mi|km|spell=in}} north of Girdwood in the Chugach Mountains on land managed by Chugach National Forest. Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains into Crow CreekGlacier CreekTurnagain Arm. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises 4,000 feet (1,219 m) above Crow Creek in {{convert|1.5|mi|km}}. The mountain was so named by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1932 because of the very rugged topography on the mountain top,Donald J. Orth, Dictionary of Alaska Place Names, U.S. Government Printing Office, 1967, page 790. and the toponym was officially adopted the same year by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

Climate

Based on the Köppen climate classification, Raggedtop Mountain is located in a subarctic climate zone with long, cold, snowy winters, and cool summers.{{cite journal | author = Peel, M. C. |author2=Finlayson, B. L. |author3=McMahon, T. A. | year = 2007 | title = Updated world map of the Köppen−Geiger climate classification | journal = Hydrol. Earth Syst. Sci. | volume = 11 | issn = 1027-5606}} Weather systems coming off the Gulf of Alaska are forced upwards by the Chugach Mountains (orographic lift), causing heavy precipitation in the form of rainfall and snowfall. Winter temperatures can drop below −10 °F with wind chill factors below −20 °F. This climate supports three small snow fields on the slopes and the Alyeska ski area {{convert|4|mi|km|spell=in}} to the south-southeast.
