Background and release

After collaborating on "5 Star" (Remix), "Coca Coca" and "Down in the DM" (Remix); "Rake It Up" marks the fourth time Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj have worked together on a recording.{{Cite web|url=http://youngmoneyhq.com/2017/05/30/yo-gotti-previews-rake-it-up-collaboration-with-nicki-minaj-videos/|title=Yo Gotti Previews "Rake It Up" Collaboration With Nicki Minaj [Videos]|date=June 1, 2017|website=Young Money HQ|access-date=June 1, 2017}} To promote the song, Gotti, on May 30, 2017, teased the song on his Snapchat during a private boat party. Minaj also played a snippet of the song on May 31, 2017, via her Instagram account, confirming that the track would be released the following day at midnight {{small|(EST)}}.{{Cite news|url=http://www.bet.com/music/2017/05/31/nicki-minaj.amp.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170601061858/http://www.bet.com/music/2017/05/31/nicki-minaj.amp.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=June 1, 2017|title=Nicki Minaj Teases New Track With Yo Gotti Called 'Rake It Up'|last=Diaz|first=Evelyn|date=June 1, 2017|work=BET|access-date=June 1, 2017}}{{Cite web|url=https://dancehallhiphop.com/2017/06/01/nicki-minaj-previews-new-song-rake-it-up-with-yo-gotti/|title=Nicki Minaj Previews New Song "Rake It Up" With Yo Gotti|date=June 1, 2017|website=Dancehall Hip Hop|access-date=June 1, 2017}} Soon after the song was announced, critics wrote how Minaj was probably trying to "steal a little of her ex-boyfriend's (Meek Mill) thunder", since he was very recently featured on another Yo Gotti song called "Top Lookin Down". On June 1, 2017, the song premiered online and was released worldwide as a download.
