History

{{further|Boko Haram insurgency}}

Rann is one of the localities in north-eastern Nigeria that have become accessible to humanitarian organizations. Emergency assistance is gradually being increased in areas that were previously unreachable. In Rann, around 43,000 people are internally displaced and struggle with serious food shortages and severe acute malnutrition. Humanitarian access to the area has been difficult due to insecurity and bad roads, as stated by United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in its press release.[http://reliefweb.int/sites/reliefweb.int/files/resources/17012017_nga_press_release_emergency_response_mobilised_following_airstrike_on_rann.pdf EMERGENCY RESPONSE MOBILISED FOLLOWING AIRSTRIKE ON RANN LOCALITY].

On 17 January 2017, the Nigerian Air Force mistakenly bombed the camp, leaving at least 52 people dead and over 100 injured.{{cite news|author=Stephanie Busari and Ibrahim Sawab|date=January 17, 2019|title=Nigerian fighter jet strikes refugees, aid workers in Borno|url=http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/17/africa/nigeria-airstrike-refugee-camp-aid-workers-killed/|work=CNN}}{{cite news|last1=Searcey|first1=Dionne|title=Nigerian Jet Mistakenly Bombs Refugee Camp, Killing Scores|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/17/world/africa/nigerian-jet-mistakenly-bombs-refugee-camp-killing-dozens.html|access-date=18 January 2017|work=The New York Times|date=17 January 2017}}

On 14 January 2019, Rann was overrun by Boko Haram insurgents amid a general increase of insurgent attacks in the area,{{cite web|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-nigeria-security-insurgency-idUSKCN1P82I1|title=Islamic State insurgents overrun northeast Nigerian town: security...|date=14 January 2019|access-date=21 January 2019|via=www.Reuters.com}} and destroyed, with many inhabitants fleeing across the border to Bodo in Cameroon.{{cite web|url=https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2019/01/thousands-flee-islamic-state-west-africa-offensive-in-northeast-nigeria.php |title=Thousands flee Islamic State West Africa offensive in northeast Nigeria |author1=Thomas Joscelyn |author2=Caleb Weiss |work=Long War Journal |date=17 January 2019 |access-date=24 February 2019}}{{cite web|url=https://thedefensepost.com/2019/01/17/nigeria-boko-haram-shekau-faction-claims-rann-attack-video/ |title=Shekau Boko Haram faction claims attack in Rann, Nigeria |author=Fergus Kelly |work=Defense Post |date=17 January 2019 |access-date=24 February 2019}} At the time, the town had been home to 35,000 refugees. Though the attack was initially attributed to Abu Musab al-Barnawi's ISWAP, Abubakar Shekau's Boko Haram later claimed responsibility. Though the Nigerian military and allied Cameroonian Armed Forces forces subsequently retook Rann, they later abandoned it, so Boko Haram launched another raid against the town on 28 January 2019. The militants again set the settlement ablaze, murdered local elders, and caused tens of thousands to flee.{{cite web|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-nigeria-security-insurgency/after-nigerian-army-abandoned-town-boko-haram-slaughtered-at-least-60-idUSKCN1PQ55I |title=After Nigerian army abandoned town, Boko Haram slaughtered at least 60 |author=Paul Carsten |work=Reuters |date=1 February 2019 |access-date=24 February 2019}} This time, the refugees from Rann relocated to Goura in Cameroon's Far North Region.{{cite web |url=https://news.un.org/en/story/2019/02/1031822 |title='No other possibility but to leave': UN News special report from the Nigeria-Cameroon border as 35,000 newly-displaced seek safety |work=UN News |date=1 February 2019 |access-date=17 August 2018 }}

In August 2021, Rann was overrun by ISWAP insurgents who destroyed the local barracks and looted the settlement before retreating back into the bush.{{cite web|url= https://dailypost.ng/2021/09/01/borno-iswap-claims-10-nigerian-troops-died-in-rann-attack/|title=Borno: ISWAP claims 10 Nigerian troops died in Rann attack |author=Wale Odunsi|work= Daily Post |date= 1 September 2021 |access-date=23 September 2021}}
