The C Line originally interlined with the D Line, which continued north from downtown to Lower Queen Anne, Interbay, and Ballard. The two routes were uncoupled during a service change on March 26, 2016, and the C Line was moved onto Westlake Avenue to terminate in South Lake Union, sharing several stops with the South Lake Union Streetcar.{{cite press release |date=March 9, 2016 |title=More frequent, reliable bus service will soon connect more riders to congestion-free light rail |url=https://kingcounty.gov/elected/executive/constantine/news/release/2016/March/09-metro-sound-transit-changes.aspx |publisher=King County Metro |accessdate=January 11, 2019}}{{cite web |title=RapidRide C and D line extensions |url=http://metro.kingcounty.gov/programs-projects/rapidride-extension/ |publisher=King County Metro |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160404171407/http://metro.kingcounty.gov/programs-projects/rapidride-extension/ |archivedate=April 4, 2016 |accessdate=January 11, 2019}}

The C Line originally accessed downtown via State Route 99 and the Alaskan Way Viaduct, using the Seneca Street and Columbia Street ramps. The viaduct closed on January 11, 2019, and the route was moved to a new alignment in SoDo using the SODO Busway and 4th Avenue.{{cite web |date=January 2019 |title=Alaskan Way Viaduct Closure |url=https://www.kingcounty.gov/~/media/depts/transportation/metro/programs-projects/alaskan-way-viaduct/awv-closure-route-maps-press-kit.pdf |publisher=King County Metro |accessdate=January 11, 2019}} A new C Line stop serving the waterfront, at Alaskan Way and South Jackson Street, opened in February 2022.{{cite news |last=Bancroft |first=Ethan |date=February 25, 2022 |title=New bus stops opened on the Seattle Waterfront, serving southwest Seattle and King County neighborhoods |url=https://sdotblog.seattle.gov/2022/02/25/new-bus-stops-seattle-waterfront/ |work=SDOT Blog |publisher=Seattle Department of Transportation |accessdate=March 3, 2022}}

Improvements

File:RapidRide C Line stop (11234369944).jpg

The city of Seattle made major improvements to the RapidRide C and D lines with money generated by Proposition 1 (which increases sales tax by 0.1 percent and imposes a $60 annual car-tab fee).{{cite news|last1=Lindblom|first1=Mike|title=Metro bus service to get boost with passage of Prop. 1|url=http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2024953343_elexseattlebusesxml.html|accessdate=January 20, 2015|work=Seattle Times|date=November 4, 2014}}

The first round of improvements came in June 2015 when headways on the RapidRide C and D lines were decreased. Buses will arrive every 7–8 minutes during weekday rush hour, every 12 minutes during the midday hours on weekdays, every 12 minutes during the daytime on Saturday and every 15 minutes on Sunday and during weekday and weekend nights.{{cite web|url=http://metro.kingcounty.gov/schedules/673|title=RapidRide C Line Schedule|accessdate=June 28, 2015|publisher=King County Metro}}{{cite web |date=June 6, 2015 |title=Metro Transit Service Change Effective Saturday, June 6, 2015 |url=http://metro.kingcounty.gov/up/sc/rideralert/2015/june/_inc/schedule-and-route-revisions.html |publisher=King County Metro |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150914015213/http://metro.kingcounty.gov/up/sc/rideralert/2015/june/_inc/schedule-and-route-revisions.html |archivedate=September 14, 2015 |accessdate=September 13, 2015}}

The second round of improvements came in March 2016 when the RapidRide C and D lines were split apart. C Line buses now continue north through parts of Belltown and onto transit only lanes Westlake Avenue in the South Lake Union neighborhood,{{cite news |last=Lindblom |first=Mike |date=March 22, 2015 |title=Transit plan for South Lake Union: Drop 2 car lanes |url=http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/transportation/transit-plan-for-south-lake-union-drop-2-car-lanes/ |newspaper=The Seattle Times |accessdate=August 25, 2015}} terminating on Valley Street near the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center campus. D Line buses now continue south on 3rd Avenue into Pioneer Square, using layover space on 5th Avenue south of Terrace Street.{{cite web |title=RapidRide C and D Lines Extension |url=http://metro.kingcounty.gov/programs-projects/rapidride-extension/index.html |publisher=King County Metro |accessdate=August 25, 2015}}
