Biography

René Raymond Argentin was born in Champagne, Marne on 15 October 1924.{{cite news |title=L'internationale de Canoe-Kayak |url=https://www.alpes-et-midi.fr/article/internationale-canoe-kayak |access-date=27 January 2022 |publisher=Alpes & Midi |date=1 June 2017}} He started canoeing in 1942, and quickly gained proficiency in the sport. His time on the national canoeing team would last just three years, from 1948 to 1950. However, he got the opportunity to represent France in the C-1 10000 event at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. After being selected, Argentin would train alone in Marne every day for 10 km (10,000m an hour). At the Games, he finished in fourth place and missed the podium, coming in just over two minutes after Canada's Norm Lane.{{cite book |last1=Kamper |first1=Erich |title=Encyclopedia of the Olympic Games |date=1972 |publisher=McGraw-Hill |pages=163 |isbn=978-0-07-033265-2 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=PiwOAQAAMAAJ&q=%22raymond+argentin%22+canoe |access-date=15 February 2022}} He finished with a time of 1:06:44.{{cite book |last1=Phillips |first1=Bob |title=The 1948 Olympics: How London Rescued the Games |date=2007 |publisher=SportsBooks |pages=167 |isbn=978-1-899807-54-3 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=iUkNAQAAMAAJ&q=%22raymond+argentin%22 |access-date=27 January 2022}}

Argentin was also selected to compete, alongside his friend Robert Boutigny, at the 1950 World Championships, but did not attend, stating that he had been sacked following his return from the 1948 Olympics missing work due to sport, and had been rehired on the condition that he did not do it again. Argentin was the national C-1 1000 champion in 1948, as well as the C-1 1000 and 10000 champion in 1949.

As of 2010, Argentin was still actively canoeing at the age of 86.{{cite news |last1=Carrizey-Jasick |first1=Titia |title=Une descente de grands champions |url=https://www.sudouest.fr/dordogne/castelnaud-la-chapelle/une-descente-de-grands-champions-10137902.php |access-date=15 February 2022 |publisher=Sud Ouest |date=8 October 2010}} In June 2017, Argentin stated his belief that Olympic champion František Čapek should have been disqualified at the 1948 Games for using a non-approved boat. In January 2020, Argentin was noted as being the oldest surviving member of the Association of French Canoe-Kayak Internationals (AIFCK).{{cite news |title=Pornic : France Petit aux Jeux Olympiques de Munich |url=https://actu.fr/pays-de-la-loire/pornic_44131/pornic-france-petit-jeux-olympiques-munich_30813797.html |access-date=27 January 2022 |publisher=Le Courrier du Pays de Retz |date=17 January 2020}} He died in Pontault-Combault, Seine-et-Marne on 14 October 2022, one day before his 98th birthday.{{cite web |title=Raymond Argentin n'est plus |url=http://aifck.canalblog.com/archives/2022/10/16/39670972.html |website=Canal Blog |access-date=23 October 2022}}{{cite web |title=Avis de Décès de Raymond Argentin |url=https://www.avis-de-deces.net/avis-de-deces/ile-de-france/seine-et-marne-77/77340-pontault-combault/2022-10-17-argentin-raymond_3CES1HVGYuqeFJhvENhRsQ/ |access-date=23 October 2022}}
