It is found in New Guinea and New Britain. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.{{Cite web|title=Red Myzomela (Myzomela cruentata) - BirdLife species factsheet|url=http://datazone.birdlife.org/species/factsheet/red-myzomela-myzomela-cruentata|access-date=2022-01-11|website=datazone.birdlife.org}}

The reddish myzomela (M. erythrina) of New Ireland was formerly considered conspecific, but phylogenetic evidence indicates that both are distinct species, and it has thus been split from it by the IUCN Red List, BirdLife International, and the International Ornithologists' Union.{{Cite web|title=Species Updates – IOC World Bird List|url=https://www.worldbirdnames.org/new/updates/species-updates/|access-date=2021-06-13|language=en-US}}{{Cite report|title=IOC World Bird List 11.2|url=http://www.worldbirdnames.org/ioc-lists/crossref|language=en|doi=10.14344/ioc.ml.11.2|doi-access=free}}
