It is endemic to Colombia.{{cite web |url=http://research.amnh.org/vz/herpetology/amphibia/Amphibia/Anura/Aromobatidae/Anomaloglossinae/Rheobates |title=Rheobates Grant, Frost, Caldwell, Gagliardo, Haddad, Kok, Means, Noonan, Schargel, and Wheeler, 2006 |author=Frost, Darrel R. |year=2014 |work=Amphibian Species of the World: an Online Reference. The name Rheobates is derived from the Greek words rheo (stream, current) and βάτης bátēs (a walker), in reference to the riparian habitat of the type species Rheobates palmatus. They are associated with streams in sub-Andean forests and foothills of the Andes at low to medium altitudes.{{cite web |url=http://www.batrachia.com/orden-anura/aromobatidae/rheobates/ |title=Rheobates |author=Acosta-Galvis, A.R. |year=2014 |work=Lista de los Anfibios de Colombia V.03.2014 |publisher=www.batrachia.com |accessdate=24 August 2014}}
