Richard John Killeen {{post-nominals|country=NZL|ONZM}} (born 1946){{Cite book |last=Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa |title=Treasures from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa |publisher=Te Papa Press |year=2005 |isbn=1-877385-12-3 |pages=72}} is a significant New Zealand painter, sculptor and digital artist.

Biography

Killeen was educated at the Elam School of Fine Arts, where his lecturers included Colin McCahon, before graduating in 1966. He has won a number of awards, including the QE2 Arts Fellowship, and has been the subject of several major exhibitions. He is particularly known for his arranged collections of aluminium 'cut outs' hung on walls, from 1978 onwards, and has continued arrangements of objects in this style.{{Cite web|last=|first=|date=|title=Richard Killeen|url=http://mcleaveygallery.com/artists/richard-killeen/|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=2021-01-14|website=McLeavey Gallery}} In the 2002 Queen's Birthday and Golden Jubilee Honours, he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to painting.{{cite web |url=https://dpmc.govt.nz/publications/queens-birthday-and-golden-jubilee-honours-list-2002 |title=Queen's Birthday and Golden Jubilee honours list 2002 |date=3 June 2002 |publisher=Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet |accessdate=25 June 2020}}

Style

His early cut-outs reflected Killeen's "discontent with the compression caused by the four static points of the frame," and an answer was found in their "off-stretcher presentation."{{Cite book|title=New Zealand Art: a modern perspective|last=Bett|first=Elva|publisher=Reed Methuen Publishers Ltd|year=1986|isbn=0-474-00063-X|location=39 Rawene Road, Auckland|pages=57}} These are created from cardboard templates, which he uses to cut aluminium sheeting, lacquer, and paint.
