Living conditions

Living conditions for local people on the island are often difficult. Education facilities, for example, are quite limited for children. Some non-government organisations help with the provision of books for children on Rinca.Eva Muchtar, '[http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2012/04/26/gardens-learning.html Gardens of Learning'] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120429161948/http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2012/04/26/gardens-learning.html |date=2012-04-29 }}, The Jakarta Post Weekender, 26 April 2012. Local people must also take some care to avoid Komodo dragons because Komodos in the area occasionally attack and kill humans.Markus Makur, '[http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2012/10/13/komodo-dragon-bites-elderly-woman-rinca-island.html Giant lizard attack: Komodo dragon bites elderly woman on Rinca island'] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150320014142/http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2012/10/13/komodo-dragon-bites-elderly-woman-rinca-island.html |date=2015-03-20 }}, The Jakarta Post, 13 October 2012.

Sea conditions

Rinca and Komodo Islands bracket a north-south passage between the Indian Ocean and the Flores Sea. Due to the large bodies of water and narrow gap, the waters between Rinca and Komodo are subject to whirlpools and currents in excess of 10 knots.{{Cite web |title=Komodo National Park |url=http://ww12.komodo-gateway.org/ |access-date=2020-11-27 |website=ww12.komodo-gateway.org |archive-date=2020-12-05 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201205090357/http://ww12.komodo-gateway.org/ |url-status=live }}

Diving in the region requires care.{{Cite web |url=http://www.starfish.ch/dive/Komodo.html |title=Diving in Komodo Island |access-date=2019-01-27 |archive-date=2022-10-13 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221013124523/http://www.starfish.ch/dive/Komodo.html |url-status=live }} In June 2008, five scuba divers (three British, one French and one Swedish) were found on the southern coast of Rinca after having been missing for 2 days. The group had drifted {{convert|20|mi|km}} from where their dive boat abandoned them. They survived on oysters and other shellfish.{{Cite web |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7441446.stm |title=BBC Online |access-date=2008-06-07 |archive-date=2022-10-13 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221013124523/http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7441446.stm |url-status=live }}

Fauna

Being less known and less visited than Komodo Island, Rinca is a good place to see the Komodo dragon in its natural environment with fewer people to disturb them. Day trips can be arranged to the Loh Buaya park facility on Rinca Island from Labuan Bajo on Flores by small boat at the park headquarters. A jetty marks the entrance to the park facility. A short walk leads to the local park office where there are rangers to accompany visitors on short or medium-length walks to see komodos and other animals such as monkeys, deer and buffalos.
