Research
Markwica’s research focuses on international security, foreign policy, and the psychological dimensions of international politics. His first book, Emotional Choices, was published in 2018 by Oxford University Press.{{Cite journal|author=Neta Crawford|date=June 2020|title=Review of Robin Markwica, Emotional Choices.|url=https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S1537592720000948/type/journal_article|access-date=2025-04-09|journal=Perspectives on Politics|language=en|volume=18|issue=2|pages=671–672|doi=10.1017/S1537592720000948|s2cid=225856917|issn=1537-5927}} It introduced "emotional choice theory" (also referred to as the "logic of affect") as a third action model alongside rational choice theory and the logic of appropriateness.{{Cite journal|author=Keren Yarhi-Milo|date=February 2020|title=Review of Robin Markwica, Emotional Choices: The Psychology of Leaders in World Politics|url=https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/pops.12592|access-date=2025-04-09|journal=Political Psychology|language=en|volume=41|issue=1|pages=199–207|doi=10.1111/pops.12592|s2cid=242504336 |issn=0162-895X}} The theory organizes, explains, and predicts the ways in which emotions shape decision-making. It is associated with its own method for identifying emotions and tracing their influences on behavior.{{Cite journal|author=Rose McDermott|date=2019|title=Roundtable on Robin Markwica, Emotional Choices|url=https://issforum.org/ISSF/PDF/ISSF-Roundtable-10-28.pdf|access-date=2025-04-09|journal=International Security Studies Forum (ISSF)|volume=10|issue=28|pages=4–7}}
