The rose subfamily Rosoideae consists of more than 850 species, including many shrubs, perennial herbs, and fruit plants such as strawberries and brambles. Only a few are annual herbs.
The circumscription of the Rosoideae is still not wholly certain; recent genetic research{{cite journal |author1=Torsten Eriksson |author2=Malin S. Hibbs |author3=Anne D. Yoder |author4=Charles F. Delwiche |author5=Michael J. Donoghue |name-list-style=amp |year=2003 |title=The phylogeny of Rosoideae (Rosaceae) based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the trnL/F region of chloroplast DNA |journal=International Journal of Plant Sciences |volume=164 |issue=2 |pages=197–211 |doi=10.1086/346163 |url=http://biology.duke.edu/yoderlab/reprints/2003Eriksson_et_alIJPS.pdf |format=PDF}} has resulted in several changes at the genus level and the removal from Rosoideae of some genera (notably Cercocarpus, Cowania, Dryas and Purshia) previously included in the subfamily.
