Sam Mehran ({{IPAc-en|ˈ|m|əːr|æ|n}} {{respell|MUR|an}}; August 17, 1986 – July 28, 2018) was an American-Australian musician, songwriter, and producer who co-founded the punk band Test Icicles and later formed the solo projects Matrix Metals and Outer Limits Recordings (OLR).{{cite web |last1=Monroe |first1=Jazz |title=Sam Mehran (Test Icicles, Outer Limits Recordings) Dead at 31 |url=https://pitchfork.com/news/sam-mehran-test-icicles-outer-limits-recordings-has-died/ |website=Pitchfork |date=July 30, 2018}}{{cite web |last1=Moore |first1=Sam |title=Test Icicles musician Sam Mehran has died, aged 31 |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/sam-mehran-has-died-test-icicles-musician-2361265 |website=NME |date=July 31, 2018}}{{cite web |last1=Connick |first1=Tom |title=Remembering Sam Mehran of Test Icicles |url=http://www.anothermanmag.com/life-culture/10436/remembering-sam-mehran-of-test-icicles |website=Another Man Mag |date=July 31, 2018}} His solo work differed substantially from Test Icicles and was often produced in a lo-fi manner. He received little critical notice in his lifetime, a Dazed Digital editor commented, however, "Mehran possessed an incomparable talent that belied his relatively low public profile." His first album as Matrix Metals, Flamingo Breeze, was described as a pioneering work of the vaporwave genre.{{cite web |last1=Bulut |first1=Selim |title=Remembering Sam Mehran, one of underground music's most unique talents |url=http://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/40845/1/remembering-test-icicles-outer-limits-recordings-musician-sam-mehran |website=Dazed Digital |date=July 30, 2018}}
Career
Mehran, along with Rory Attwell and Devonté Hynes, founded Test Icicles in 2004. The band was active until 2006, when it broke up.{{cite web |last1=Jamieson |first1=Sarah |title=SAM MEHRAN ANNOUNCES OUTER LIMIT RECORDINGS' RELEASE |url=http://diymag.com/archive/sam-mehran-announces-outer-limit-recordings-release |website=DIY Mag |date=March 22, 2013}} Mehran began releasing music under the alias Outer Limits Recordings in 2010, which was immediately associated with the era's loose-knit, early hypnagogic pop and chillwave scene. He described himself being influenced mostly by Ariel Pink, R. Stevie Moore, and "basically most music that was recorded before 1990."{{cite web |last1=Masters |first1=Marc |last2=Currin |first2=Grayson |title=Take Time: The Rise of Slow Music |url=https://pitchfork.com/features/the-out-door/7858-the-out-door-7/?page=3 |website=Pitchfork |date=September 17, 2010}} Music journalist Paul Lester characterized OLR as "heavenly hooks and catchy choruses". Marc Masters of The Wire compared his Foxy Baby album to Ariel Pink's "AM pop blender", and described the Matrix Metals album Flamingo Breeze as a "mini-masterpiece of sub-disco loops".{{cite magazine |last=Masters |first=Marc |date=October 2010 |issue=320 |title=Soundcheck: Outer Limit Recordings - Foxy Baby |magazine=The Wire |page=58}}
OLR issued numerous cassette tapes and limited edition vinyl discs, and according to Mehran, the project lasted until "somewhere in the spring of 2011". Its first LP release was the compilation Singles, Demos and Rarities (2007-2010), released on April 15, 2013, and was intended to be its only album. A follow-up, Birds, Bees, Babys, Bacteria, was issued on cassette later that year.{{cite web |last1=Renshaw |first1=David |title=Sam Mehran of Test Icicles, Outer Limits Recordings, has died |url=http://www.thefader.com/2018/07/30/sam-mehran-test-icicles-outer-limits-recordings-death |website=The Fader |date=July 30, 2018}} After OLR, Mehran co-wrote and co-produced Katie Rush's Law of Attraction (2014).{{cite web |last1=Saxelby |first1=Ruth |title=Katie Rush Channels '80s Movie Nostalgia On "Law of Attraction" |url=http://www.thefader.com/2014/09/03/katie-rush-law-of-attraction |website=The Fader |date=September 3, 2014}} He then produced Puro Instinct's Autodrama (2016) and Samantha Urbani's Policies of Power (2017).{{Cite web|url=https://www.thefader.com/2017/08/29/samantha-urbani-interview-policies-power-ep|title=Samantha Urbani Left Her Band And New York. Death
Mehran died by suicide at his home in Hollywood on July 28, 2018, aged 31.{{cite news|url = https://www.npr.org/2021/07/28/1021892816/3-years-after-his-death-sam-mehrans-loved-ones-share-posthumous-album-cold-brew|title = A Posthumous Album Captures The Humor — And Heartache — Of Sam Mehran|last = Mehta|first = Jonaki|date = July 28, 2021|accessdate = August 24, 2021|work = NPR}} His body was found the following morning.
