Samit Dasgupta is a professor of mathematics at Duke University working in algebraic number theory.
Biography
Dasgupta graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1995 and placed fourth in the 1995 Westinghouse Science Talent Search with a project on Schinzel's hypothesis H. He then attended Harvard University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1999.{{cite web |url=https://sites.google.com/a/mbhsmagnet.org/www/news/fall15/dasgupta |title=Samit Dasgupta '95: Algebraic Number Theory |publisher=Montgomery Blair High School Magnet Foundation |date=Fall 2015 |accessdate=August 4, 2020 |archive-date=November 3, 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201103074602/https://sites.google.com/a/mbhsmagnet.org/www/news/fall15/dasgupta |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |url=https://math.duke.edu/people/samit-dasgupta |title=Samit Dasgupta |publisher=Duke University Department of Mathematics |accessdate=August 4, 2020}} In 2004, Dasgupta received a PhD in mathematics from University of California, Berkeley under the supervision of Ken Ribet and Henri Darmon.{{MathGenealogy|id=16985}}
Dasgupta was previously a faculty member at University of California, Santa Cruz. As of 2020, he is a professor of mathematics at Duke University.{{cite web |url=https://services.math.duke.edu/~dasgupta |title=Samit Dasgupta |publisher=Duke University |accessdate=August 4, 2020}}
Research
Dasgupta's research is focused on special values of L-functions, algebraic points on abelian varieties, and units in number fields. In particular, Dasgupta's research has focused on the Stark conjectures and Heegner points.{{Cite journal |last1=Dasgupta |first1=Samit |last2=Darmon |first2=Henri |last3=Pollack |first3=Robert |year=2011 |title=Hilbert modular forms and the Gross-Stark conjecture |url=http://annals.math.princeton.edu/2011/174-1/p12 |journal=Annals of Mathematics |language=en |volume=174 |issue=1 |pages=439–484 |doi=10.4007/annals.2011.174.1.12 |issn=0003-486X|doi-access=free }}{{Cite journal |first1=Samit |last1=Dasgupta |first2=Mahesh |last2=Kakde |first3=Kevin |last3=Ventullo |year=2018 |title=On the Gross–Stark Conjecture |journal=Annals of Mathematics |volume=188 |issue=3 |pages=833 |doi=10.4007/annals.2018.188.3.3|jstor=10.4007/annals.2018.188.3.3 |s2cid=53554124 |url=https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/publications/on-the-grossstark-conjecture(3feab83f-fd60-43e3-811f-ad3be8abd1b4).html }}{{Cite journal |last1=Dasgupta |first1=Samit |last2=Spieß |first2=Michael |year=2018 |title=Partial zeta values, Gross's tower of fields conjecture, and Gross–Stark units |journal=Journal of the European Mathematical Society |language=en |volume=20 |issue=11 |pages=2643–2683 |doi=10.4171/JEMS/821 |issn=1435-9855}}
Awards
