History

The encyclopedia was founded in 2004.{{cite news |title=NLS appoints world's first Gaelic Wikipedian |url=https://www.scotsman.com/news/nls-appoints-world-s-first-gaelic-wikipedian-1-4353120 |access-date=7 December 2018 |work=The Scotsman |language=en |archive-date=7 December 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181207115659/https://www.scotsman.com/news/nls-appoints-world-s-first-gaelic-wikipedian-1-4353120 |url-status=live }} In 2017, Susan Ross was hired by the National Library of Scotland (NLS) to develop and promote the encyclopedia, a part time position that lasted 12 months. The NLS intended to augment its Gaelic resources following a digitization drive that put Gaelic-language materials on the Internet. Ross is a second-language speaker of Gaelic who learned the language as a teenager and completed a doctorate in Gaelic studies. She has been editing Uicipeid since 2010.{{cite news |title=Skotske bibleteek sil Gaelictalige Wikipedia útwreidzje |url=https://www.itnijs.frl/2017/01/skotske-bibleteek-sil-gaelictalige-wikipedia-utwreidzje/ |access-date=7 December 2018 |work=It Nijs |date=31 January 2017 |language=fy}} Working with community groups, she created help pages and worked to attract more editors.{{cite news |title=Library appoints the world's first Gaelic Wikipedian - National Library of Scotland |url=https://www.nls.uk/news/archive/2017/01/gaelic-wikipedian-begins |access-date=7 December 2018 |publisher=National Library of Scotland |archive-date=7 December 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181207102850/https://www.nls.uk/news/archive/2017/01/gaelic-wikipedian-begins |url-status=live }}{{cite news |last1=Hannan |first1=Martin |title=Gaelic Wikipedia website Uicipeid to undergo major development as part of link-up |url=https://www.thenational.scot/news/14896462.gaelic-wikipedia-website-uicipeid-to-undergo-major-development-as-part-of-link-up/ |access-date=7 December 2018 |work=The National |date=11 October 2016 |language=en |archive-date=7 December 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181207103300/https://www.thenational.scot/news/14896462.gaelic-wikipedia-website-uicipeid-to-undergo-major-development-as-part-of-link-up/ |url-status=live }} The grant was sponsored by Wikimedia UK and Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
