History

The station opened on 5 October 2013 as part of the fourth phase of the Vienna U-Bahn expansion from Aspernstraße, becoming the eastern terminus of the U2. It is one of two metro stations serving the Seestadt, alongside Aspern Nord.{{Cite web |title=derStandard.at |url=https://www.derstandard.at/consent/tcf/1379292779622/u2-verlaengerung-von-der-stummellinie-zur-geister-u-bahn |access-date=2025-04-04 |website=www.derstandard.at}} Due to low demand, only every second train on the U2 travels to Seestadt, with the others terminating at Aspernstraße. The frequency of trains going to Seestadt will increase as the area continues to grow.{{Cite web |last=lok |title=Ab Mittwoch fährt nur jede zweite U2 bis zur Seestadt {{!}} Heute.at |url=https://www.heute.at/s/ab-mittwoch-faehrt-nur-jede-zweite-u2-bis-zur-seestadt-100189915 |access-date=2025-04-04 |website=www.heute.at |language=de}}{{Cite web |date=2013-09-20 |title=U2-Publikumsfahrt bis Seestadt Aspern |url=https://wien.orf.at/v2/news/stories/2604752/ |access-date=2025-04-04 |website=wien.orf.at |language=de}}

Seestadt station is located in the center of Seestadt Aspern, a newly developed urban area in the east of Vienna. At the time of the station’s opening in 2013, the surrounding area was largely undeveloped, and construction is still ongoing. The station spans Lake Aspern, an artificial body of water created as part of the development project.{{Cite web |date=2023-09-12 |title=Inside One of Europe's Largest Urban Development Projects—aspern Seestadt |url=https://www.esri.com/about/newsroom/blog/vienna-seestadt-smart-city-prototyping |access-date=2025-04-04 |website=Esri |language=en}}

The station is situated on a single elevated structure and features a fully enclosed central platform with exits on both the northern and southern shores of the lake. To the south of the station, at Ada-Lovelace-Straße, a four-track reversing facility and a stabling and inspection hall were constructed to accommodate up to six long trains.{{Cite web |last=Parker |first=Angela |date=2018 |title=aspern Seestadt: Master Plan Revisited: Status of Planning 2017 |url=https://www.aspern-seestadt.at/jart/prj3/aspern/data/downloads/aspern_masterplan_2017_EN_2019-08-30_1208911.pdf? |url-status=live |access-date=5 April 2025}} The station was built without escalators.{{Cite web |date=2013-10-29 |title=Seestadt: Neue U2-Station ohne Rolltreppe - Donaustadt |url=https://www.meinbezirk.at/donaustadt/c-lokales/seestadt-neue-u2-station-ohne-rolltreppe_a734096 |access-date=2025-04-04 |website=MeinBezirk.at |language=de}}
