The Senior Players Championship, stylised by the PGA Tour as The SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, is one of the five major championships on golf's PGA Tour Champions. The inaugural event was played {{Time ago|1983}} in 1983 and the age minimum is 50,{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=sQxJAAAAIBAJ&sjid=SIMMAAAAIBAJ&pg=3771%2C3389765 |work=Youngstown Vindicator |location=(Ohio) |agency=AP photo |title=Snead takes aim |date=June 10, 1983 |page=18}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=sgxJAAAAIBAJ&sjid=SIMMAAAAIBAJ&pg=3136%2C3596930 |work=Youngstown Vindicator |location=(Ohio) |agency=Associated Press |title=Miller Barber, Littler lead |date=June 11, 1983 |page=14}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=tAxJAAAAIBAJ&sjid=SIMMAAAAIBAJ&pg=1124%2C5060679 |work=Youngstown Vindicator |location=(Ohio) |agency=Associated Press |title=Barber wins seniors title |date=June 13, 1983 |page=17}} the standard for men's senior professional golf tournaments.

The winner gains entry into the following season's Players Championship on the PGA Tour (although Retief Goosen, the 2019 winner, was not allowed to play in the official subsequent Players Championship). For sponsorship reasons in 2023, the tournament was titled as the Kaulig Companies Championship.{{cite magazine |url=https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2022/06/15/kaulig-companies-new-title-sponsor-senior-players-championship-firestone/ |title=Kaulig Companies to become title sponsor for Senior Players Championship, which will stay at Firestone Country Club |magazine=Golfweek |first=Maria |last=Ridenour |date=June 15, 2022}}

Unlike the U.S. Senior Open, the Senior PGA Championship, and the Senior Open Championship, it is not recognized as a major by the European Senior Tour, and is not part of that tour's schedule.

Since 2019, the Senior Players championship has been held at the South course of the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio; it replaced the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational that had been held there before moving to Memphis, Tennessee.{{cite web |url=http://www.cleveland.com/golf/index.ssf/2018/04/wgc_bridgestone_invitational_will_leave_firestone_in_2019.html |title=WGC-Bridgestone Invitational will leave Firestone in 2019 (photos) |website=cleveland.com |first=Branson |last=Wright |date=April 12, 2018}}

Early years

The first four editions were at Canterbury Golf Club near Cleveland; the inaugural in 1983 had fifty players, no cut, and a purse of $250,000; Miller Barber won the title and $40,000, sinking a {{convert|10|ft|0|adj=on|spell=in}} birdie putt on the final hole to finish one stroke ahead of runner-up Gene Littler. Arnold Palmer was seven strokes back, in a tie for fifth.
