Seventy Two and Sunny was met with "mixed or average" reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, this release received an average score of 52 based on 8 reviews.

David Browne's mixed review in Entertainment Weekly said: "Kracker now sees himself as a scruffy Nashville troubadour, and on his third CD, he pulls off the conceit far better than [Kid] Rock has." On a critical note, Browne adds "Kracker's voice is too banal - and his material too mundane - to cut as deeply as his rural heroes."
