Six60 is the third extended play by New Zealand band Six60. The release was a wide-scale commercial success in New Zealand, debuting at number two on the New Zealand albums chart, and being one of the top-performing releases in New Zealand between 2017 and 2021.
Production
The album was recorded at HQ, the band's newly created studio in Auckland, New Zealand.{{cite news|url=https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/business-at-the-front-party-at-the-back-how-six60-turned-their-band-into-a-big-deal/ECK3JWERSU4QKXPR3DA3ZRIAC4/ |title=Business at the front, party at the back: How Six60 turned their band into a big deal |first=Chris |last=Schulz |website=The New Zealand Herald |date=9 November 2017 |accessdate=12 November 2022}}
Release
The songs from the extended play were released weekly as singles, beginning on 13 October 2017 with "Don't Give It Up" and ending with "Up There" on 17 November, the release date of the EP.{{cite web|url=https://music.apple.com/us/artist/six60/386478059/see-all?section=singles |title=Six60 Singles & EPs |website=iTunes |access-date=14 November 2022}} After the release of the EP, the band embarked on The New Waves World, a world tour which included dates in Europe, finishing on 17 March 2018 in Whangārei.{{cite news|url=https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/news/review-band-six60-light-up-gloomy-whangarei-night-in-outstanding-concert/TKKQKQJ34ZJNO6UQCQV6XWATAY/ |title=Review: Band Six60 light up gloomy Whangarei night in 'outstanding' concert |first=Andrew |last=Johnsen |work=The Northern Advocate |publisher=The New Zealand Herald |date=18 March 2018 |accessdate=14 November 2022}}{{cite news|url=https://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/news/six60-announces-concert-in-the-bay/IFFLFLMMC5ZALZ5IQB4KVB6WSI/ |title=SIX60 announces concert in the Bay |first=Astrid |last=Austin |work=Hawkes Bay Today |publisher=The New Zealand Herald |date=5 December 2017 |accessdate=14 November 2022}} In 2022, the album was certified six times Platinum, after selling over 90,000 units.
Critical reception
The New Zealand Herald gave Six60 EP four stars out of five. The reviewers felt that the EP was a positive sonic change for the band, distancing themselves from reggae-influenced rock in favour of "pop-soul summer jams", a move that "feels like it's become more natural to them". The reviewers also felt that the influence of Pharrell Williams, who the band had recorded with in the past, was felt on the record due to the songs' minimalism.{{cite news|url=https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/review-six60-have-written-the-song-of-the-summer-but-whats-next/SYC6M4RWODMDFY3XK46JTJZNGQ/ |title=Review: Six60 have written the song of the summer - but what's next? |website=The New Zealand Herald |date=23 November 2017 |accessdate=14 April 2023}}
At the 2018 New Zealand Music Awards, the Six60 EP won the band the Best Group and Highest Selling Album awards, while the single "Don’t Give It Up" won the Highest Selling Single and Radio Airplay Record of the Year awards.{{cite news|url=https://themusicnetwork.com/six60-dominate-2018-nz-music-awards/ |title=Six60 dominate 2018 NZ Music Awards |first=John |last=Ferguson |website=The Music Network |date=16 November 2018 |accessdate=14 November 2022}}
