History

Sparton Records was founded in 1930 by the American electronics company Sparks-Withington Corp., of Jackson, Michigan, which made Sparton radios. It manufactured and distributed Columbia Records in Canada from 1939 to 1954. It had distribution arrangements with other American record companies, most notably ABC Records.{{Cite web|url=http://www.capitol6000.com/sparton.html|title=The Capitol 6000 website - The Canadian SPARTON Discography|website=www.capitol6000.com|access-date=2016-06-01}} It was the first record company in Canada to manufacture stereo records in 1958.[https://web.archive.org/web/20121010043837/http://thecanadianencyclopedia.com/articles/emc/sparton-of-canada-ltd "Sparton of Canada"] The Canadian Encyclopedia Sparton Records suffered a potentially fatal blow when ABC Records switched Canadian distribution from Sparton to Polydor Records in November 1968.{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=sAoEAAAAMBAJ|title=Billboard|date=1968-11-09|publisher=Nielsen Business Media, Inc.|language=en}} While the record company folded the following year, Sparton Corporation is still in operation.
