Robert Christgau was critical of Strange Man, Changed Man in a 1979 review for The Village Voice, dismissing the album as a mixture of "old-wave" and new wave clichés and likening Tchaikovsky to "a power pop Crosby, Crosby & Crosby."{{cite news|last=Christgau|first=Robert|author-link=Robert Christgau|url=https://www.robertchristgau.com/xg/cg/cgv11-79.php|title=Christgau's Consumer Guide|newspaper=The Village Voice|date=29 October 1979|accessdate=18 May 2016}}

Retrospectively, Jim Green of Trouser Press described the album as "an energetic mixture of The Byrds, Springsteen and, not surprisingly, The Motors", writing that in addition to "three fine singles... the rest of the material has also worn remarkably well."{{cite web|last=Green|first=Jim|url=http://www.trouserpress.com/entry.php?a=bram_tchaikovsky|title=Bram Tchaikovsky|website=Trouser Press|accessdate=18 May 2016}}
