Stromerosuchus (meaning "Ernst Stromer's crocodile") is a dubious genus of Late Cretaceous crocodyliform.R. E. Molnar. (1989). Terrestrial tetrapods on Cretaceous Antarctica. In J. A. Crane (ed.), Origins and Evolution of the Antarctic Biota, Geological Society Special Publication 47:131-140 Fragmentary remains have been found from the Cenomanian-age Bahariya Formation of Egypt.

Discovery and naming

The holotype was collected by Ernst Stromer and Richard Markgraf in 1911 and along with many others found from Bahariya, were in the possession of the Egyptian Geological Survey. In 1922, the fossils were sent back to Stromer (who was in Germany at the time), but they were badly crushed in shipment from Egypt.{{cite book |last=Nothdurft |first=W. |author2=Smith, J. |author3=Lamanna, M. |author4=Lacovara, K. |author5=Poole, J. |author6=Smith, J. |year=2002 |title=The Lost Dinosaurs of Egypt |publisher=Random House |location=New York |pages=[https://archive.org/details/lostdinosaursofe00will_0/page/242 133] |isbn=9780375507953 |url-access=registration |url=https://archive.org/details/lostdinosaursofe00will_0/page/242 }}

Stromerosuchus aegyptiacus was named in 1936 by Oskar Kuhn.{{cite journal |last1=Kuhn |first1=O. |year=1936 |title=Weitere Parasuchier und Labyrinthodonten aus dem Blasensandstein des mittleren Keuper von Ebrach |journal=Palaeontographica |volume=83 |pages=61–98}}

Classification

Because the known remains are so poor, the genus is now regarded as a nomen dubium. Some material has been referred to the genera Aegyptosuchus and Stomatosuchus, both named by Stromer from the Bahariya material.{{cite web|url=http://www.paleofile.com/Demo/Mainpage/Taxalist/Crocodilia.htm |title=Crocodilia |work=Paleofile |accessdate=3 October 2010}}

It was assigned first to Crocodylia by Kuhn (1964)O. Kuhn. (1964). Unsolved problems of the phylogeny of amphibians and reptiles. Jahreshefte des Vereins für vaterländische Naturkunde in Württemberg 118/119:293-325 and then to Stromerosuchidae by Kuhn (1966)O. W. M. Kuhn. (1966). The Reptiles. Systematics and Phylogeny. Krailling bei München: Oeben. before being moved into Aegyptosuchidae by Molnar (1989) and later Crocodyliformes.
