Gyngell, a Sydney-based thrower, set a national shot put record in 1985 of 18.89m.{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article101972383 |title=Etienne saves best to last |newspaper=The Canberra Times |date=27 January 1988 |page=37 |via=National Library of Australia}} He was Australia's national title holder in the shot put in both 1985 and 1986.{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article122484347 |title=Times Sport |newspaper=The Canberra Times |date=17 February 1985 |page=3 (Sport) |via=National Library of Australia}} At the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, he claimed a bronze medal in the shot put, finishing behind Billy Cole and Joe Quigley. Soon after he gave up competitive athletics, partly motivated by an ambition to become a Christian minister.
