Geography
As of circa 1995 the favored locations for sub-Saharan African settlement in the city of Paris included the 18th, 19th, and 20th arrondissements. In addition the following suburban municipalities had African settlement: Charenton, Issy-les-Moulineaux, Ivry-sur-Seine, Montreuil, and Pantin.
Montreuil's inhabitants often exaggeratedly nickname the town the "second Malian town after Bamako", or sometimes "Mali-sous-Bois"{{cite news |last=Bordier |first=Julien |date=2005-10-06 |title=Mali-sous-Bois |url=http://www.lexpress.fr/region/mali-sous-bois_484282.html?xtmc=mali_sous_bois |language=fr |newspaper=L'Express |accessdate=2013-11-01 }} or "Bamako-sur-Seine" even though the Seine does not run through the town. Montreuil does indeed have a large Malian population : more than {{formatnum:2000}} inhabitants according to the INSEE in 1999, between {{formatnum:6000}} and {{formatnum:10000}} people according to the mairie,{{in lang|fr}} [http://www.montreuil.fr/1-8894-Yelimane---Mali.php Le cercle de Yelimané sur le site de la mairie de Montreuil] which estimates that Montreuil has the largest Malian community in France. 10% of the population is Malian or has Malian origins.{{in lang|fr}} c dans l'air émission du 04/04/2012 http://www.france5.fr/c-dans-l-air/international/aqmi-main-basse-sur-le-mali-35834
