History

In late 2011, Symbolab was released as a mathematical semantic search engine by Israeli entrepreneurs Michal Avny (CEO), Adam Arnon (Chief Scientist), and Lev Alyshayev (CTO).{{cite news |author=Shira Abel |date=October 8, 2012 |title=The guys from The Big Bang Theory will love mathematical search engine Symbolab |publisher=The Next Web |url=https://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/10/08/the-guys-from-the-big-bang-theory-will-love-mathematical-search-engine-symbolab/ |access-date=2015-11-29}} At the onset, it could interpret a user-entered equation or symbolic problem and find the solution if it existed. Later, the ability to show all of the steps explaining the calculation were added.[https://www.mindcet.org/en/ges-2014-symbolab-takes-the-hassle-out-of-the-equation/ Symbolab takes the hassle out of the equation]

The company's emphasis gradually drifted towards focusing on providing step-by-step solutions for mathematical problems at the secondary and post-secondary levels. Symbolab relies on machine learning algorithms for both the search and solution aspects of the engine.{{cite news |title=GES 2014: Symbolab takes the hassle out of the equation |author=Gilad Nass |publisher=MindCet |date=August 20, 2014 |url=http://www.mindcet.org/en/ges-2014-symbolab-takes-the-hassle-out-of-the-equation/|access-date=2015-11-29}}

Acquisition in 2020

In October 2020, California-based Course Hero acquired EqsQuest Ltd. and the Symbolab engine for an undisclosed amount.
