Should we include Vance's meeting with Pope Francis on Easter Sunday and tribute?
I believe we should. It will go down as a significant moment in his Vice Presidency in my opinion. I added content about the meeting and his tribute today, it then got reverted. Happy to get a consensus on its inclusion before doing anything else. MrHunter25 (talk) 15:37, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
:It will go down as a coincidence. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:49, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
:A very large number of folks have met with the Pope over the last dozen years. The fact that this meet was close in proximity is simple happenstance. O3000, Ret. (talk) 15:58, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
:Probably not. This is meant to be a summary article, not a play by play. I'm context of some people meeting with the Pope is a big deal. However, in context of the US VP, not so much. Springee (talk) 16:39, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
:Not include. One of many meetings and one of many tributes. - Shearonink (talk) 16:49, 21 April 2025 (UTC)

::I think it should be added, since Vance is the last world leader to have met the Pope. While both the Pope and the VP of the United States have met with many world leaders, there is only one last meeting, making it notable. This is especially true given that Vance is the first Catholic VP of the United States. Green Montanan (talk) 21:38, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
:::Incorrect. He met with the Croatian prime minister after he met with Vance. Nobody is trying to add that to that biography. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:26, 21 April 2025 (UTC)

- No, it should not be included in this article. Death and funeral of Pope Francis already has sentence saying {{tq|On Easter Sunday, 20 April, Francis met with United States Vice President JD Vance[45][46] to exchange Easter greetings}}. Some1 (talk) 23:26, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

Cafeteria Catholicism Expansion
I’ve provided 2 examples (while only 1 is necessary) for JD Vance
to be considered a Cafeteria Catholic rather than a Practicing Catholic. For those unfamiliar with the Catholic faith who would like to expand:
1. Works of mercy are basic ethical standards for how a Catholic is to treat those in need. If JD Vance demonstrates objections to these teachings, feel free to annotate it.
2. A “practicing Catholic” not only adheres to the teachings and ethical standards of the Catholic Church, they must also attend Mass (church) every Saturday night or Sunday. There are also additional days a practicing Catholic must attend Mass (church) which are called “Holy Days of Obligation.” In addition, a practicing Catholic must attend 1 confession minimum per calendar year.
3. In the Catholic Church, Marriage is a Sacrament, meaning, it isn’t just “some ceremony” - if JD Vance is not married in the Catholic Church and he is “having sexual relations with a woman he is calling his wife” each time he touches her it is called a “mortal sin.” In short, if JD Vance is baptized Catholic and is alleging to be married to someone outside of celebrating the Sacrament of Matrimony in the Catholic Church, what he is doing is not Catholic (further argument to support Cafeteria Catholicism)
Feel free to identify and add (with references) to JD Vance’s better fitting Cafeteria Catholicism while disallowing JD Vance to be reported as a practicing Catholic if he is not. Twillisjr (talk) 18:28, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
:Neither of the cited sources explicitly mentions cafeteria Catholicism. It is not our job as Wikipedia editors to render judgements as to whether Vance or any other public figure authentically adheres to a religious belief system; we must follow what the WP:RELIABLE sources say. Additionally, characterizing a notable figure's religious beliefs with a potentially pejorative label such as cafeteria Catholicism requires careful attribution per WP:BLP and MOS:LABEL. Carguychris (talk) 19:19, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
::JD Vance is (by use of sources) best defined as a Cafeteria Catholic rather than a Practicing Catholic. True or False? Twillisjr (talk) 19:28, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
:::{{tq|True or False?}} Red herring. Please find a source that specifically mentions cafeteria Catholicism in relation to Vance. Inserting your own interpretation of a Wikinotable figure's belief system when it is not explicitly mentioned in a reliable source violates WP:OR and particularly WP:SYNTH. Carguychris (talk) 19:50, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
::::The Catholic Church is against Capital Punishment and Supports Immigration. JD Vance supports Capital Punishment and rejects immigration. So, JD Vance is not (in your revert to the original wording) “acknowledged the influence of Catholic theology on his sociopolitical positions” and meets the criterion for cafeteria catholic Twillisjr (talk) 19:59, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::Point to a reliable source that says what you just said here, and your belief may have some influence with the article. By the way, Rolling Stone, which you originally cited, is generally unreliable for politically sensitive issues, according to WP:RSPLIST. —ADavidB 21:07, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::{{tq| JD Vance is not (in your revert to the original wording) “acknowledged the influence of Catholic theology on his sociopolitical positions” and meets the criterion for cafeteria catholic}}. There is plentiful verifiable evidence that Vance has "acknowledged the influence" of Catholic theology on his political positions. "Acknowledging the influence" is plainly different than rigidly following Catholic doctrine to the letter, thus the statement is accurate. But this doesn't mean that you can apply a potentially pejorative MOS:LABEL to Vance in the article lead based on your personal interpretation of his beliefs. WP:BLP holds articles such as this one to a high standard. Carguychris (talk) 21:10, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
I would agree that if we're going to call Vance that, there would be need to be multiple reliable sources calling him that directly, rather than a WP:SYNTH argument that he fits the criteria. Where an accusation is made, such as with James Carville, we don't note the accusation on his biography page, but rather on the Cafeteria Catholic page. BBQboffingrill me 00:10, 11 May 2025 (UTC)

Change "Born in Middletown, Ohio, and raised primarily in Eastern Kentucky, Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps..." to "Born and raised in Middletown, Ohio, Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps..."
Vance only spent summers in Eastern Kentucky, the bulk of his childhood and all of his formal education was in Middletown. It's inaccurate to say he was primarily raised in Eastern Kentucky. If Eastern Kentucky is to be mentioned, it shouldn't be phrased this way. OffTheDeepEnd (talk) 00:25, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
