Just because baseball is making every effort to sweep the steroids issue under the rug doesn't mean that the rest of us have to follow their lead.

Why was Bonds not listed as a multiple winner? I'm pretty sure winning it 7 times qualifies as "multiple." Someone was probably trying to promote a personal agenda. I'm adding him to the list.Mickeyg13 23:41, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Why was A-Rod (2003, 2005, 2007) deleted from the "Multiple winners" section [by 69.126.29.77 (talk) at 23:16, 26 July 2009]? Wouldn't it be better to just add an asterisk? He did in fact receive the award those 3 years. Eagle4000 (talk) 04:27, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

In the "Multiple winners" table, there are double asterisks next to certain years for Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez. I looked for an explanation of the double asterisk, but couldn't find one, until I noticed (at the bottom of the table) an "indented bullet" that noted it was for players linked to steroids. When I looked at the edit version, I could see the two asterisks to the left of the steroid note, and realized that Wiki converts the two asterisks into an indented bullet.

I then tried to correct this, by inserting the code for a superscript "1" in two places: (a) to the left of the note and (b) after the names of Bonds and A-Rod. This worked, except that the insertion of the superscript code halted Wiki's automatic conversion of the two asterisks into an indented bullet.

Now, the note (at the bottom of the table) reads, as follows:

"1** Denotes players with multiple MVP awards who have been linked to steroid usage"

The editor who is working on this page might wish to revise the second and third sentences of the following paragraph: "The Sporting News continued to give its own awards until 1938, when it temporarily agreed to unify its selections with the BBWAA's (it continued to give its own trophy, however). TSN went back to its own selections for 1944 and 1945, until requested by Commissioner Happy Chandler to withdraw in order to lend legitimacy to the BBWAA awards. By 1948, however, TSN was back to making its own selections, which it has done ever since."

The reason is that the article on The Sporting News Player of the Year Award has a note that says: "See also: The Sporting News Most Valuable Player Award (discontinued 1946)". Its first paragraph then says the following: "Listed below in chronological order are the Major League Baseball players chosen by The Sporting News as recipients of the TSN Player of the Year Award. Since 1936, it's the only major award that is given to a single player from MLB, rather than to a player in each league, and is judged by TSN'' baseball experts as having had the most outstanding season."

You might wish to modify the said second sentence of the MVP article, by referring to The Sporting News Most Valuable Player Award and noting that it was discontinued in 1946.

You might also wish to revise the third sentence of the MVP article, by specifically naming the The Sporting News Player of the Year Award and noting that it has a different name and was started in 1936. That appears to mean that TSN issued both a "TSN MVP" award and a "TSN Player of the Year" Award from 1936 to 1945. If not, one of the latter two articles appears to have a mistake in it.

The history section states that Walter Johnson, Carl Hubbell, and Hal Newhouser are the only pitchers to win twice. Does Ohtani not qualify since he is a two-way player or is this oversight due to recency? 38.27.26.133 (talk) 13:33, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

– With most NBA and NFL award articles moved to remove the word "Award", I figured the same could be done for MLB. The only problem is that the listed awards are given to two recipients, one each for the National League and American League. So should the word "award" be removed outright or should it be changed to "awards" like the NBA conference finals MVP awards? :# Unless terms like "Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player Award" are "consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of independent, reliable sources" ((MOS:CAPS), assume it's a descriptive umbrella title, and use lower case.
