Changes
This article needs to reflect the current state of the Mohegan tribe as most other Native American tribes are set up. Perhaps making it look more like the Pequot page with an up-to-date info box about the tribe and its "reservation" in Uncasville would help somewhat. oncamera(t) 04:06, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
:This is hard to do! Much of the knowledge isn't written, and a lot of what is was undertaken by the casino band. Some of the knowledge that *is* written can be found on the web, but is less than scholarly. That said, there must surely be more we can add without causing an edit war. A picture of Uncas Leap would be fabulous. There doesn't appear to be one in Wikimedia Commons. Perhaps someone can just go snap one and add it. ;) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abesottedphoenix (talk • contribs) 02:10, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Resources for expanding the article
If you'd like to help expand this article, here are some resources.
After both the English and German wikipedia articles were deleted due to plagiarism, the folks over at de.wikipedia.org have rebuilt the German Mohegan article, to the point where it's [http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mohegan&oldid=57005747 currently] quite comprehensive and detailed (42,268 bytes) thanks largely to German users Napa (talk | contribs) and Nikater (talk | contribs) and others.
It's well worth having a look at the article if you know some German. Otherwise, here are some references, some from the German site, plus a few others:

[[Template:Infobox ethnic group]]
I started the Template:Infobox ethnic group - but it needs work! Can somebody make a flag? (See:[http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/xa-moheg.html] © "FOTW Flags Of The World — http://flagspot.net/flags/") ~E : 74.60.29.141 (talk) 23:02, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
Is there verification for this statement?
In 1987, Mohegan Tribal Chief Ralph Sturges met Princess Ann of The Mohegans and her family at Bradley Airport after their talk on September 11, 1987. Sturges made contact with Princess Ann after Michael Jackson married the teen model and became Prince Jackson. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.190.233.44 (talk) 12:48, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

Proposal to Convert "Mohegan" into a Disambiguation Page
Hi all,
The current "Mohegan" article is outdated and overlaps with the more complete and factual Mohegan Tribe article. In addition, there's a notable business entity, Mohegan (company), (which redirects to the other article for some reason) that warrants its own article.
To help distinguish these topics clearly, I propose converting this page, "Mohegan" into a disambiguation page, linking to:
- Mohegan Tribe — the Native American tribe
- Mohegan (company) — the gaming and hospitality company
- And other related uses (e.g., notable figures, etc)
You may notice that there’s already a disambiguation for Mohegan found here, but I think the organization of the articles on this topic is very confusing.
Input is welcome! If there's no opposition within a reasonable time, I will proceed with the change.

:*Oppose. It's common on Wikipedia to have an article for the people and then an article for tribes/reservations, such as Sioux and any of the Dakota/Lakota tribes/reservations. Also, the gaming companies that the tribe owns should not be given equal weight as the tribe itself so the Mohegan article should not be separated into a disambiguation page.
: oncamera (talk page) 17:38, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks for your input! You raise a valid point — it's definitely common on Wikipedia to distinguish between an ethnic group and specific tribal governments or reservations, like with the Sioux example.
::However, in this case, the current Mohegan article doesn't clearly serve that purpose — it's a partial duplicate of the more complete Mohegan Tribe article and hasn't been maintained. Rather than treating it as a distinct topic (people vs. tribal government), it reads more like an outdated article on the tribe, and does not talk much about the people.. Even if it did, I don’t think that an article solely on the Mohegan People would even be warranted. If we truly wanted separate pages for “Mohegan people” and “Mohegan Tribe,” we’d need to do some restructuring — which might be worthwhile, but that’s a separate task from this proposal.
::On the second point: I agree that the tribe itself should not be diminished or equated with the company. That’s exactly why the base title "Mohegan" shouldn't exclusively represent either one — because both the tribe and the company are notable and referred to as "Mohegan" in different contexts. A disambiguation page would not elevate the company, but would serve to navigate clearly between equally valid topics. This is similar to other cases where multiple prominent subjects share a single term (e.g., Cherokee, Navajo, etc.).
::So to clarify:
::*The tribe’s article will stay fully intact at Mohegan Tribe.
::*The company would be at Mohegan (company).
::*The base term "Mohegan" will act as a neutral disambiguation page to guide readers appropriately.
::This seems to follow Wikipedia’s conventions around WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and WP:DISAMBIG. Alexnewmon2623 (talk) 18:16, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
:::Stop using AI to reply. oncamera (talk page) 21:17, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. The company doesn't even have an article yet. Mohegan is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and has been stable as an article for the ethnic group since 2007. Oncamera correctly points out is a different scope than the federally recognized Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut. You might want to read up on WP:PROMO and WP:COI. Then instructions for proposing a move can be found at WP:MOVE. Yuchitown (talk) 18:22, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
- :Thanks for the feedback. A few clarifications:
- :You're right that Mohegan (company) doesn’t exist yet — but it’s a notable, well-sourced subject and I’m drafting the article now. Promo or COI has nothing to do with this. All thease articles exist already, I’m just trying to help out by organizing them correctly. The Mohegan Sun article is the de facto Mohegan (company) article; it has info on a lot of the tribes business endeavors, but they do not belong in that article. The Mohegan Sun article needs to be about the Mohegan Sun, and the rest of the business endeavors of the tribe under their company, Mohegan, belong in its own article
- :Regarding WP:PRIMARYTOPIC — I agree that the Mohegan people are an important and likely candidate. But as I said all of the info in this article are in the Mohegan Tribe article, and the existing “Mohegan” article is just an outdated duplicate of the other one.
- :If consensus is that “Mohegan” should be reserved for the ethnic group, then perhaps it’s worth creating a more focused article on that topic — right now the page doesn’t really define a separate scope from the tribe. Alexnewmon2623 (talk) 18:36, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
- ::If you see problems with the Mohegan article, you should correct them or point them out in a separate section. Yuchitown (talk) 19:58, 29 May 2025 (UTC)
=Conclusion=
I suppose that the consensus here is that we shouldn't merge the article but rather correct/renovate this one. I will go ahead and begin a renovation/overhaul on this article and will post here about the changes I made once I am done. Thank you to those who participated in the discussion. Major article revision: scope and structure clarified
This article has been thoroughly rewritten and restructured to focus on the Mohegan people as an ethnic and cultural group, rather than duplicating the existing article on the Mohegan Tribe. The goal of this revision was to center Mohegan identity, worldview, language, and cultural continuity across time, including both pre- and post-contact contexts.
= Summary of major changes =
- Re-scoped the article to distinguish cultural identity from political/legal recognition (now addressed in the Mohegan Tribe article).
- Created a structured section layout based on reliable sources and standard ethnographic format.
- Expanded and restructured the language section, with subsections on:
* Eastern Algonquian context
* Preservation of language (Fidelia Fielding and Samson Occom)
* Modern revitalization efforts
- Added comprehensive coverage of spirituality and worldview, including:
* The Trail of Life
* Ceremonial life (e.g., Green Corn Ceremony)
* Role of oral tradition and ancestor reverence
- Reframed traditional lifeways through:
* Matrilineal social structure
* Seasonal subsistence and ethnobotany
* Clothing, housing, and daily life
- Introduced a new section on modern identity, including the distinction between cultural and legal belonging.
- Updated and curated the “See also” section to reflect related figures, groups, and topics.
All sources used are verifiable and reflect both academic research and primary materials from the Mohegan Tribe’s own heritage archives. This renovation aims to present a more accurate, culturally grounded, and encyclopedic account of Mohegan identity, shaped by the people themselves and those working closely with the community.
